What exactly do DJs do at concerts?

They dont play any instruments or sing.. just curious what exactly it is that they do on stage? Their remixes/tracks are already recorded, might as well just play it on speakers and they dont even need to be there. Sure same can be said about other genres of musicians but the difference is they can recreate their works on spot

They don't do anything, all the songs are mastered and remixed so they sound the best untouched, all they have to do is sync them and play them one after another, and they do that in like 10 seconds for a 6 minute long song. They just pretend to play around with the decks to look cool because people have no idea what DJing is.

I feel the same. If you aren't playing an instrument or singing, GTFO the stage and quit pretending you're actually a valuable part of the show.

Ok, real talk, it depends what kind of DJ your referring to OP... the job of a club DJ is different to say working a live show supporting a rap group.

A club Dj will have most of his mixes pre-made and is basically their to cue them in and out, not very demanding

With a live show its completely different tho, most everything has to be done there and then

They perform the actual mix on stage. They do have remixes already recorded, but when performing on stage, they do the actual mix right there.

Usually it is not recreated "on spot" as you say, and you can notice they slight variation of performing the mix live.

Of course it would all depend on the actual skill of the DJ. I've seen some do really good mixes on stage, and some others that look like they just played one song after the other.

"Most everything" like what? Pressing more buttons? If you don't have a midi controller keyboard, you're not really doing much of anything, and I can't remember the last time I saw a DJ for a rap group actually playing notes. It's all a bunch of loops and samples and prerecorded audio tracks.

It's exactly what the name implies: Disc Jockey. They have to make judgement calls based on the crowd to keep a certain type of sound going or if the crowd isn't feeling it, they need to figure a way to transition off of it to something else they *think* the crowd will respond better to.

The ones who 'crash' songs, are your typical fail-dj's. They prep a mix and play with the sound FX's and samples on the fly to make it seem like they're dj'ing.

Believe me, it's not as easy as it looks, nor is it a cheap hobby to get into. Transitioning from a song that has a BPM of 130 with another at 125 is noticeably different. So the DJ needs to sync the two up by either speeding up the new song (125) to 130bpm and beat match, or they speed up the new song marginally and slow down the old one marginally (A LOT HARDER since the beat timing will change and alter the sound of the song completely... anyone who isn't piss drunk and can hear half-decently will notice this change).

If they want to mix songs into each other well then they will be syncing up the other track and previewing it, before actually mixing it which will take a few seconds, but not much else. Alot of it is in the reading of the audience and selecting the right track to play next.

Girl Talk actually does something pretty cool where he has a couple large monitors with songs listed and has the audience randomly pick a song from each one and he does a mashup on the spot. Granted he may have prepared some of the mixing ahead of time, but it is still a pretty cool concept.

Oh my god. Changing the volume. A task for only the most creative and technically advanced minds.

    brb dropping the beat
What, like hitting "play" on a preprogrammed drum track, which they probably downloaded as a midi file from somewhere else?

    brb fading in/out
Oooooh, back to the all impressive volume changing.

I'm making it sound like they're pressing a few buttons here and there and turning a few knobs/pushing faders while not actually playing a god damn instrument for a song that they may or may not have even written or recorded in the first place. You try to make it sound like it's difficult sh*t, but that's basically sh*t your average drunk soundman does while real musicians play real instruments up on stage.

Also, the people coming up and making requests are really stagehands that make the DJ look like he is ACTUALLY crossfading into a requested song.

ITT people think DJing is sooo easy....
brb most people in this thread wouldnt be able to even beat match two songs accurately.

unless they just use a computer and sync **** up. Definitely easier than guitar and other instruments though

and 2nd people dont realize that most DJs, especially in the EDM world, famous ones atleast, are all producers to begin with. NOt just anyone can be a good DJ, u still have to be musically inclined...

as for the buttons, theyre using effects like filters etc, messing with the treble mid and bass (all the EQs) to fade **** in nicely, and setting cue points in their headphones while everyone else is listening to the song on the dance floor.

Most of the time DJs are listening to the next song the whole time in their headphones while youre listening to the song thats playing

I feel the same. If you aren't playing an instrument or singing, GTFO the stage and quit pretending you're actually a valuable part of the show.
    oh really?
