Would I be retarded for enlisting in Navy with college degree?

I've always thought combat medic was a cool job since I was a kid. Apparently the Navy has a job called corpsman where men can choose fleet marine force. In that job you undergo some marine training then get assigned to a marine squad as a medic. I just finished my 4 year degree. Would I be a fool for enlisting? I wouldn't want to be a Navy officer anyway. Although Army or Marine officer sounds more interesting.

Once I get out of the Navy, will employers think there was something wrong with me for choosing to enlist rather than be an officer?

Enlisting in any service with a Bachelor's is a mistake. I would become an officer or find a job.

Every job and service is different though so this is based off my exp in the Air Force.

That's good to hear. Also, I would probably have to switch careers after getting out. Does anyone know if enlisted folks can get into top 25 business schools assuming you do well on the GMAT? I know the best schools like Harvard and Wharton MBA programs take military people but it seems like they were all officers...

yeah you can. If you get a 700 gmat or so I think you will probably get a decent amount of scholarship money to schools outside of the top 7. I'm going to Navy OCS in two months and planning on going to business school after my commission is over.

Retarded? No, but I'd still go go OCS if you are fit and willing.

I mean, if you had enlisted right after highschool you could have gone to college for free, but obviously it's too late for that. So you might as well make some extra money as an officer and be treated a bit better. Definitely research more though and do whatever you want to do though.

Also keep in mind the Corpsman have to stay active duty for 5 years.

You act being enlisted is somehow going to pull you down or something man.

Listen, employers love Veterans. In a lot of industries they get preference over non-Veterans.

Economy is awful right now and the military provides a stable paycheck, a way to serve your country, and a way to learn some valuable skill sets.

A lot of enlisted men go on to become officers further down the road. And once you get out if you want to go to Graduate school I'm sure being a Veteran would only help you. And if you want to go top 25 school then obviously high GMAT scores will be necessary but being a Veteran wouldnt in any way hurt your odds.

Most of the branches are inundated with recruits trying to go officer as it is.

May be a stupid question but do you still have to go through basic training and all that shiz if you join as an Officer? I graduate this summer with my Bachelors and I've thought a little about the Military.

What should I look into if I want to do research? My degree is Biochemistry, I'd think the Air Force would have plenty of chemistry jobs.

Well it seems Navy officers aren't allowed to be Corpsman and I don't have any interest in any of their officer branches. I do have some interest in being an Army or Marine officer and since I'm in excellent shape with a decent gpa (3.4) I think I could get one to accept me, but being a Corpsman sounds really cool to me for some reason.

ha uhh, you don't just enlist to become an officer brah. It takes a long time and the Navy is highly competitive. It will be over a year from the time I first talked to my officer recruiter to the time I leave for OCS.

The Navy does not send their officers to basic, they go to OCS. If you are an Army officer you do go to basic though, and then you go to OCS.

I would highly recommend going to talk to your recruiter yesterday, because the process takes forever. I first talked to mine in April of 2010 and I don't leave for OCS for 7 more weeks. I've had to live at home for the past year working terrible jobs, it sucks but it will be worth it. I'm 91 percent certain the Air Force is not holding any more selection boards until October of 2011 (when FY 2012 starts for the government). The Navy MIGHT be but I'm not sure. You'd have a better shot getting a spot in the Army, (or the Marines, but you have to be in excellent shape for them to take you).

I'm not in the military but am looking into joining. From my understanding, OCS is pretty tough and is like basic but more rigorous since you are to be a leader. Unless you're going in as a professional i.e. lawyer or doctor who have it easier and its basically like going to camp.

Go officer. If you go enlisted the first thing you are going to do after a couple years enlisted is submit for OCS because you realized your mistake.

You don't enlist as an officer, you have to apply with letters of rec, tests, gpa, interviews etc. and get selected. Also enlisted and officers have different jobs available to them. I assume he wants to enlist because the job he wants is very specific and only available to enlisted personel

I wouldn't want to be a Navy officer anyway. Although Army or Marine officer sounds more interesting.

Once I get out of the Navy, will employers think there was something wrong with me for choosing to enlist rather than be an officer?
I thought about doing the same exact thing but I chose medical school.
Much respect if you go through with it.

Yep that is the reason. I wouldn't enlist for any other job. I think there is a corpsman on these forums... I need to track him down and pm him...

    Go officer. srsly srs.

As a corpsman you're not guaranteed a job as a combat medic. You'll probably end up giving shots to babys and dependents in some clinic somewhere.
