I liked what he said about the Arnold. What happens to the contest after this will be interesting to watch.

There's a danger that it will stop being a top tier show, and become just another rung in the ladder to the Olympia. Back in Levrone's day, it attracted the best bodybuilders in the world. Wheeler, Shawn, Nasser. Even Ronnie and Jay weren't above competing at the Arnold.

But this year we had neither Phil nor Kai. The only guy from the top 3 at the Olympia to appear was Branch Warren. Otherwise it was a card full of up-and-comers looking to cut their teeth (Aleksey, Roelly, Evan) and older guys trying to keep a flame lit under their careers (Dexter, Vic, JOJ).

Will next year be the same, with the top bodybuilders staying at home?

I agree with everything he said. Branch is the closest to having that perfect conditioning, but he would not stand a chance against Levrone or Wheeler.

Dave remembers when the sport was real. That's when I got into it. I was just a kid buying mags with Kevin, Cormier and Mike Mattarazzo on the cover.

I haven't even watched clips from a show since Ronnie retired.

I can't think of any bigger waste of time than staring at pics of Roelly Winklaar and Flex Lewis.


No charisma, no personalities anymore. In my opinion, the sport's done in 5 years. Once Jay and Phil retire, it's over. There will never be another line up of memorable pro's. That goes for the sport, not just the ASC.

Yup they're all correct. Mid 90's had more balance in terms of mass with sharp conditioning. The field as a whole had the greatest conditioning around at almost any show at the same time.

Chris i just saw a recent video on RXmuscle with you dave P, and levrone and you all where discussing conditioning of the 90s vs now. Whats the real reason these guys cant get into shape? Added size? different "supplements"? From what i can see these guys are still punishing themselves when it comes to diet, well some/most of them are. Look at kai greene it looks like he lives in hell when hes dieting and yet he still finds a way to come in off. Whats the difference? Is there really a 1-2% difference in bodyfat from the 90s or is it something else? They seem to constantly come in flat or holding water or any combination of the two. I thought Evan at the flex this year had some pretty insane conditioning, was it comparable to what was brought in the 90s?

I feel people have been suckered into bigger is better. It is, but only when u dont sacrfice your super detail and to some degree your shape/v taper. That said, I think a lot of guys gain too much fat off season trying to get bigger and it just means (most likley) when they diet down, its harder to get peeled.

I think drugs play a role. I mean, look at all the crap people talk about in terms of drugs...there is the assumption (to some degree) I think that some of these guys feel they can use things to burn off fat when the core fundamentals are or is the diet...which takes me back to off season. U cant get sloppy and expect to get ripped. I worked with Eduardo Correa Troy Alves last couple years and I can tell you for sure 1) they were not bloat bags in the off season and 2) they were on very strict diets. Simple as that...

Great interview. I'd love to see just ONE old timer from the 90's or early 2000 era comeback and crush all the new blood that doesn't have the qualities we saw on stage in the past. He's right the conditioning is crap, and the guys don't have balance either. Guys with serious flaws are placing high.

I think Levrone could make a strong comeback and take the Arnold and place top 3 at the O if he put his mind to it.

I hear they are talking about a masters with some fairly strong prize money? I'd love to see Ronnie, Levrone and a few more old timers on stage one more time.

Levrone could definately do damage if he wanted. His 99 British GP physique or 2002 olympia physique with a little more leg mass could beat them all except Jay. And even then it would be close.
