The only thing that changed was the military industrial complex grew, meaning it became a lot more efficient since war was more about money. We have been using precision warfare in our recent "wars" on other turf, neutering our fighting capability in order to prevent people who are not targeted (civilians) from getting hurt.

If we were to go to war against another power that was quite literally threatening our own turf, than good night sweet enemy country. We would go in there guns blazing, full fighting strength, and then the world would probably end from a nuclear war.
