i suggest that you don't rely on green tea to burn fat.

i also suggest that starting 2 threads for the same topic isn't very smart

your suggestion had nothing to do with green tea, you were implying that I was relying on green tea to burn fat, when I said I knew it wouldnt elimante fat but help it, I am also doing cardio and lifting weights.

green tea is found in many stack ingredients. and based on all the people that have taken it, it looks like it does help.

its a known fact that it does help.

thought I m,ight take up the challenge of actually getting some real info.

please excuse me if I've made any mistakes here, since I'm better at voicing my opinions than I am at backing them up.

I found a study on Medline where men were asked to drink 1.5 litres of tea for 3 days. The results were that the men who drank the tea burned an extra 28 cals / day.

It was found that the caffiene was what caused the effect.

I haven't posted the link or pasted the result since I don't know if that would be against the rules or whatever.

my thoughts....for the 28 cals a day I'd rather do an extra 30 seconds of cardio.

The real benifits of green tea come from some of the ingredients from it, not the caffine itself. I saw on t.v. some doctor said that if people start drinking green tea that alone will make them lose 10 lbs in 6 weeks =/ But its certainly not a replacement for cardio!

    Lightbulb

    Here is some info.

The dose to take according to the study:
"Obesity/Weight Control: Recent studies on green tea's thermogenic properties have demonstrated a synergistic interaction between caffeine and catechin polyphenols that appears to prolong sympathetic stimulation of thermogenesis. A human study of green tea extract containing 90 mg EGCG taken three times daily concluded that men taking the extract burned 266 more calories per day than did those in the placebo group and that green tea extract's thermogenic effects may play a role in controlling obesity.23 Green tea polyphenols have also beeen shown to markedly inhibit digestive lipases in vitro, resulting in decreased lipolysis of triglycerides, which may translate to reduced fat digestion in humans.10,11"

    source:http://www.gaiaresearch.co.za/greentea.html

3 caps of LEF's Super Green Tea extract a day should do the trick.
(or any other green tea dosis that add's up to 270 mg of EGCG a day)

    It's in Xenadrine EFX.

Green tea is good for you in many ways as it is an antioxidant. That should be the primary reason for it's use.

i just wanted to check this out a bit further....not to try and be right, but to find out if this was really going to burn 266 cals/day. Unfortunately the advertisment in the post seems to have interpreted kilojoules as calories....

the average amount of extra calories burned / day was 78 and 4 of 10 subjects did not have any increase.

it's also worthwhile noting that this study included a diet which was

    13% protien
    40% fat
    47% carbs

not the diet that we would all be eating.

    http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/70/6/1040

I'd love to see some evidence that it does something significant, I'd be over to the health food store with money in hand right after I finished eating my words.

but y'know, that extra 50-100 cals burned, that's not going to help...we already have a calorie deficit, if we want to make the deficit another 78 cals higher then it can be done for free and with minimal effort.

A functional food product for the management of weight.

    Bell SJ, Goodrick GK.

Functional Foods, Inc., Belmont, MA 02478, USA. staceyjbell@yahoo.com

More than half of Americans have a body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or more, which classifies them as overweight or obese. Overweight or obesity is strongly associated with comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, gall bladder disease, and sleep apnea. Clearly, this is a national health concern, and although about 30 to 40% of the obese claim that they are trying to lose weight or maintain weight after weight loss, current therapies appear to have little effect. None of the current popular diets are working, and there is room for innovation. With the advancing science of nutrition, several nutrients - low-glycemic-index carbohydrates, 5-hydroxytryptophan, green tea extract, and chromium - have been identified that may promote weight loss. The first two nutrients decrease appetite, green tea increases the 24-h energy expenditure, and chromium promotes the composition of the weight lost to be fat rather than lean tissue. These have been assembled in efficacious doses into a new functional food product and described in this review. The product is undergoing clinical testing; each component has already been shown to promote weight loss in clinical trials.

Powdered green tea has antilipogenic effect on Zucker rats fed a high-fat diet.

    Hasegawa N, Yamda N, Mori M.

Department of Food and Nutrition Nagoya Bunri College, Nagoya, Japan.

The effect of powdered green tea on the lipid metabolism was studied in male Zucker rats fed a 50% sucrose diet containing 15% butter. The oral treatment of 130 mg powdered green tea per day depressed body weight increase and various adipose tissue weights but food intake was unaffected. The treatment also slightly increased the plasma triglycerides. These effects were likely mediated by the inhibition of lipogenesis in the adipose tissues. The experimental group had a higher concentration of liver total lipid, triglycerides and plasma protein, and lower liver weights than the controls. This may be due to lipid deposition in the liver because of the reduction in adipose tissue weights. It was found that powdered green tea lowered the plasma total cholesterol but liver total cholesterol was unaffected. The results indicate that the hypocholesterolemic activity of powdered green tea might be due to the inhibition of the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. Copyright 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Belle,

the first one there discusses energy expenditure, which so far I have only seen minimal amounts of, which could easily be manipulated by diet or training.

the second one tells me that it inhibits the storage of fat. I've seen this conclusion a few times, but this thread is about burning fat (isn't it?), not how to stop fat from storing. If you were on a calorie surplus then maybe this would be of use ? but on a calorie deficit, it's not importnt right ?

again, let me say, I'm not trying to be right or wrong, just want to get the facts straight.

The original post was about Green Tea enhancing weight loss/fat loss. There are three ways to lose weight. A.) Cut the intake of fat. B.) Stop or reduce the intake of dietary fat from being stored so that the body has to call upon fat reserves in the body instead. C.) Increase energy output so that more fat can be burned from the fat stores.

Now if Green Tea increases your energy output over 24 hours AND also stops any dietary fat being stored in the fat stores whilst your taking it, it has in effect FORCED your body to take fuel from the only other source hasn't it? Which means.... it helped your body to burn fat.

I drink it all the time not just for weight loss benefits. It has anti cancer and anti diabetic benefits and goodness knows what else. It is loaded with anti oxidants and even if it doesn't reduce the fat in my body (which it has been clinically proven ) then it is atleast going to help my body get rid of the toxins that are released whilst I am dieting, exercising. This is what happens when your dredging up tons of fat to be burned. It is fat and toxins that have been stored from when all the fat was stored. Drink water and green tea seems like a pretty good way of helping to detox those nasty free radicals your shaking up in your system.

So many benefits here of which I personally swear by. Studies are studies.

    Note:

If you have some to say it is useless for either fat loss or otherwise, then DO post the studies to support this. Let's have an intelligent debate about it.

I'm happy with the evidence you've posted since I've basically seen the same thing over and over.

I don't think there would be any evidence saying it's useless. I probably wasn't clear on my point in my previous post. I'm saying that it doesn't burn a significant amount of fat and that the same energy expenditure can easily be manipulated through diet or training.

I also agree that it inhibits fat storage, but I've been led to believe that no (significant) fat storage occurs during a calorie deficit....is that correct ?

I'm not debating the other benifits of green tea either, only that the fat burning qualities are not significant even though they do exist.

nb. Discounting the first half of this thread.... am I not debating this intelligently ? Maybe you can give me some pointers (no sarcasm intended), since for me this is also about having an intelligent debate.

It may make the difference between someone doing maintenance and cardio the odd day...knowing that if they have maintenance level and use exercise 4 days of the week to burn say 250 calories, the green tea on top of that would enhance weight loss further still at times when cardio is not being done. When someone creates a calorie deficit it can be anything from 250-500.

Someone may just rely on the extra cardio to create a deficit and only create a deficit of 250 calories, and the green tea may enhance the process. Because it has effects on cholesterol, and is therefore good in that respect and has an effect on the metabolism, making it run a slightly faster (as indicated in study) I feel it would enhance such a situation. Or one where someone is just weight training, and cutting back 250 calories from their maintenance.

As you know we cannot always get the calories bang on everyday when counting unless we eat the same thing and same quantity day in and day out. I may almost hit maintenance one day and be 250-500 under the next. I guess if your drinking green tea on the days where you almost hit maintenance, it will ensure that your metabolism was running a little faster and burn a little more fat off. If you only cut back 250 then it will enhance that again.

I cannot grumble with the anti oxidant properties of it to be honest. I drink decaffeinated green tea and cut the coffee out completely now. I will start to drink coffee again when I have lost weight, but my weight gain had happened due to eating to infrequently and then too large a portion size as well as consuming over 10 cups of coffee a day on most days with x2 tsp sugars in each cup. So what I am doing now is more healthful and keeping my body toxin free whilst I get rid of the toxins it had stored. I don't see the point putting toxins in when your trying to cleanse out the body of fat and toxins that go with it that has been back logged and dumped into fat cells and not expelled due to inacitivy. Also I'd rather drink a cup of something that has been found to be healthy than something that is going to stuff around with my insulin levels. The fact that they have associated green tea with enhancing fat loss is just another bonus to me on top of the many benefits that it is imparting by helping my body get rid of the crud and also reversing any damage done by such crud/toxins. The diet now is much changed and you only have to read labels on ready made meals and fast food to see the amount of chemical contained within and know that there must be a huge overload on the body at times. Simply put, sometimes, your liver or kidneys cannot cannot get shut of it all in the quantity that your shoving it in and therefore dumps it into storage/fat cells.

Guess its like a little insurance policy for when you have weaknesses also. Atleast if you over do things a little or don't get to go to the gym on the last minute and have eaten too many calories, it will bring you under if you have a few cups of green tea.

I agree with what you've said.

In that situation where someone is near maintenece cals or might not be doing a lot of cardio or is prone to missing a training session then green tea would be a wise investment (for fat loss).

I was coming more from a "I have the exact cal deficit I need with no significant variables" point of view.

thanks for not tearning me a new A
