Fuuuuuu shoulder pain when pressing
So I just woke up this morning with shoulder pain, when I lift my right arm above shoulder height, I feel a small pinch.. I haven't worked out in about 8 weeks due to winter, so I don't know where exactly this came from..
So about 30 minutes ago, I wanted to test the severity of my shoulder pain.. I attempted to do pushups... but more of an incline emulation (hands more align with the sides of my head. I got to the third push up and my right shoulder was in so much pain that it felt like my right shoulder/arm was just about to give out.
I can press downwards... but I can't above shoulder height.
I spoke with my pops (orthopedic surgeon), tells me I'm gonna have to get on a steroid injection.. probably 1-2 times a year and that it is the most common pain due to growth spurts and overuse.. I religiously do military press and incline bench
Anyone know if there's any such natural remedies that would fix this? I've taken flax seed + fish oils for 9 years now.. dunno if there's anything else to lessen the pain... or lube up the shoulder (not entirely sure why I have this pain other than wear and tear).

very possible that it's a rotator cuff strain/tear

Do you feel a burning sensation? Dullness or ache? I had those and it turns out it was a torn Labrum. Got the surgery in September of '10 and just fully recovered in January '11.

how long did it take to get back in the gym, doing presses, and how long did it take to get back to full strength?
getting results from my shoulder scan tmw, and if its a full rotator cuff tear, i'm debating a surgery.

It feels like the kind of pain that you feel the day after a work out (when you haven't worked out for a few weeks~months). Not so much burning... almost pinching like... and my upper arm just spasms out and makes me feel like it's about to give out on me... I just tried to do the push ups again so I can try to describe the feelings/symptoms.

Depends on everyone and I went on my doctors counsel as I did not want to re-tear or risk that. 3 months after surgery I was doing weights but nothing serious (High sets high reps) I would do 6 -10 sets of the barbell only on bench Progressively went from 60 reps to 130. By month 4 i was doing real weights. I would say it took me 4 to 5 months to get back to full strength. I have friends who have had similar surgeries and have gotten back into the gym a lot quicker than I did but most of them didn't get back to full strength until the 4 to 5 month time frame. If you have the money and time I would definitely get the surgery, the shoulder will never be back to 100% as in pre-tear but it will be close to. Mind you I tore my shoulder back in 2007 and didn't get it fixed till 2010. To the OP, set a schedule to get a x-ray and a 3T-MRI.

X-ray wont show ****
you need an ultrasound or mri w/ dye.

Here is the full report of the findings on my shoulder just in case anyone wanted to know: "There is a small amount of joint fluid. There is no significant bursal fluid. There is a Type II acromion with mild impingement on the supraspinatus muscle and tendon. There is mild tendinosis of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons without a focal tear. The subscapularis tendon is intact. The bicipital tendon is well positioned in the bicipital groove and normal distally but demonstrates tendinosis or partial tear proximally. There is a diffuse posterior labral tear extending to the posterior superior labrum. The anterior and inferior labrum are intact."

just noticed that you said it pinches when you abduct your arm.
that's impingement syndrome, if left untreated, it leads to an RC tear 90+% of the time.
as is my case.
and chances are... yours too, sorry to break it to ya.

You could try Glucosamine, Chrondroitin, and MSM, it's normally sold all together in one pill. I use the Swiss brand (white bottle, blue cap). It'll say "joint support" and people who are suffering from arthritis use it, but it's also good for prevention and maintenance. glucosamine and chrondroitin are ingredients the body uses to heal and grow tendons, cartilage and anything associated with joints. MSM I believe is used to reduce inflammation and to reduce pain. Now I believe I read that it was a tear and obviously tears don't heal without surgery, but I don't see how this could harm it. I'm currently on it and the one strength training program on the main page recommended taking a supplement for your joints as it's important to take care of your joints, we take protein shakes for our muscles why not a supplement for our tendons and what not.

Ya when I compress my shoulder (squeeze / flex it into my side) I can feel it too.. but like I said.. I can do pushups with little pain.. and I can press downwards with no pain at all. But incline bench is nearly impossible to get more than 3-4... I'll try light military press later or tomorrow... but I assume I'll have the same results =\

Thanks... I'm not gonna lie I haven't taken any supplements concentrated on joints support.. anything remotely close to it would be flaxseed oil.
I'll go to the store in a few minutes and check it out.. I should have known better to supplement joint support ingredients

+1 for this, I use Osteo bi-flex but generics work just as well. Wish I knew about joint support back in the day.

Of course, see a doctor, but you can do some quick evals for RC damage (with a helper):

You can also do tests for impingement:

There are too many [interacting] structures in the shoulder to hazard a guess based on your description. The RC tests help isolate specific movements (rotations) and RC integrity/function.
All the supplements probably won't do much for the acute inflammation. If you want to get out in front of it get on a regimen of ibuprofen: 600 to 800 mg 3x/day for 7 days (without stopping even if pain subsides).
Topical DMSO gel, 90%, completely knocks it out with me but DMSO is "all natural" in the sense that it is not approved for human usage. It's a staple in the veterinary community. Requires some caution when using (clean hands and skin as it is skin soluble and will drag whatever is on your skin with it into your blood stream) and burns like all holy he11. I'd start with the ibuprofen.
Naturally, stopping working out, at least pressing and overhead movements, until this resolves and you speak with a physician and get an evaluation. An x-ray might help identify if you have any gross bony abnormalities (e.g., bone spur) or have a predisposition for impingement syndrome (e.g., hooked acromion). If you don't, you may rupture/damage the subscapularis, supraspinatus, or biceps tendon or any combination of them. A torn/damaged labrum is hard to identify and would require an MRI (+contrast) or something suitable for identifying subtle soft tissue abnormalities.

Of course there's the labrum, but what's not shown on there roughly in that location is the subscapularis (RC muscle), short head biceps tendon, & pec major.
