    Oats vs Cereal

I hear alot of people like to eat oats for breakfast because of the high amount of carbs but i don't understand because cereal also has alot of carbs and way more vitamins, yet i never hear of anyone eating cereal.

Can anyone tell me why oat meal is better?

I don't think anything is "better" than the other, but usually oatmeal contains more vitamins and nutrients than cereal, but that's about it.

    Different carb sources.

Look at the Sugar content underneath the Carb Content on the nutrition label, it's usually exactly the same. Meaning the carbohydrates are entirely made up of simple sugars.

Oats are better imho because they are more filling.

Oats are complex which give you more energy and speed your metabolism while simples (cereal) are just plain old carbs, not to mention all the sugar in cereal.

Yes Oatmeal speeds up your metabolism way more. Just doesn't have as many calories as Cereal. If I was bulking, I'd be eating Cereal. If I was cutting, I'd be eating Oatmeal.

Whether you're eating monosaccharides (cereal) or polysaccharides (oats) you are still eating sugar. They have the same effect once they're in the body as they will both become, or already are, glucose.

The reason so many people on this website eat oats over cereal is simply because they're told it's better. I've never looked into the micronutrient profiles of oats, but I highly doubt the ones people on this forum and other sites are the kind they should be eating if they want to consider it a healthier choice.

I eat oats, but I'm starting to miss cereal, so what if it is a whole grain Cereal with only 2 grams of sugar? Would that be fine to eat since it is not a simple sugar like lucky charms?

Not in the slightest. The only thing that would be similar to comparing cola to water in this case, is comparing cereal to nothing.

It does not matter how much sugar is in cereal. The majority of the brands of oats bought by individuals on this site will actually have the same amounts, if not more.

Your post doesn't even have a correct response to the post you quoted. Saying "not really" to "carbohydrates are sugars" makes you seem awfully foolish.

Carbohydrates, or saccharides, are sugars and starches, which provide energy for humans and animals, and cellulose which make up many plant structures. “Carbs,” as they are now commonly referred to, have become both a blessing and a curse, as the process of modern food production has changed the way we consume them. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple, or monosaccharides and complex, or polysaccharides.

Simple carbohydrates, which are found in fruits and dairy products are more easily digested by the body. They are also often found in processed, refined foods such as white sugar, pastas, and white bread.

Complex carbohydrates, which take longer for the body to digest, are most commonly found in vegetables (cellulose), whole grain breads and pasta, brown rice, and legumes. Foods with unrefined grains, such as brown rice, retain complex carbs, unlike refined grains, such as white rice. This is because the refining process removes some of the grain’s fiber and nutrients. Eating a serving of whole grain cereal such as oatmeal will fill you up and give you longer lasting energy than a bowl of sugary cereal due to the way the body processes and uses the carbohydrates

The bold is where my issue with this thread lies. I'd be willing to bet that atleast 75% of the teens on this website who say they eat "oats" eat the prepackaged crap, rather than oatmeal.

In addition to that, complex carbohydrates give longer lasting energy because they must be broken down and digested differently, not because they're used differently.

So what your saying is oats might be better if you need energy, but eating the same amount of oats vs. cereal will have no difference in body compisiton?

and by prepackaged crap do you mean instant oatmeal?

I mean the flavoured/sweetened crap that you get in a fancy little package, which you open up and either microwave or toss on the stove. That is not oatmeal.

Nah, I eat Quaker rolled oats, the kind that taste like cardboard. Lol

^^ I think some people are taking issue with the comment that carbs = sugar. Technically, it would have been better for him to switch the order:

    sugar = carbs.

yeah, i probably should have said it like that.

I was trying to make the point that when someone looks at a cereal label and it says -

    Carbohydrates - 45g
    Sugars - 45g

They are the same, it is simply stating that all the Carbohydrates in the product are made up of simple sugars.

Though by the looks of it, i may have caused even more confusion lol.

Fair enough. Though once they're inside the body they become the same thing, so carbs = sugar technically holds true.

Of course. Just because you are trying to be healthy, does no mean you have to eat cardboard flavour foods 24/7. Personally, I eat Apple Cinnamon Cheerios almost every morning. That is loaded with sugars, but it will not make a big difference. Just hit your macros and you'll be fine.

For. ****. Sakes. How many times am I going to have to go over this? Yes, cereal loaded with sugar and lacking micronutrients will make a difference as far as your health goes. No, it is not okay to just hit your macros, and no, hitting your macros will not make you healthy. Stop spreading this bull****.

The cereal that i eat contains 22g of carbs and 10g of sugar while the oats that i recently bought contain 33g of carbs and 13g of sugar. According to the labels its very clear that cereal has more different kinds of vitamins than oats.

But i did notice a huge difference this morning when i ate oats for breakfast. I was more full and sort of bloated while when i eat cereal i'm hungry right afterwards.

But like i said the label makes it seem like cereal has more ****, i am of course talking about whole grain cereal. Calories are smaller per serving as well.

But because i feel full with oats i will continue to eat them from now on.
