19 y/o dies when bench pressing

CROWN POINT -- A Crown Point teenager died Wednesday from injuries he suffered during a weightlifting accident, police said.

Tylor McGuinness, 19, died at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., after a Tuesday accident at Achieve Fitness in Crown Point, according to State Police.

He was lifting weights by himself when a bar he was benchpressing fell on his neck, crushing his windpipe, officials said.

McGuinness was taken to the hospital and placed on life support, but passed away a day later.

State Police have determined the death was accidental.

this is why i always lift in a powercage or at least with safety pins attached. even if youre not fatigued, things like this can happen because of muscle cramps etc...you never know

Stafon Johnson, running back at USC, suffered the same exact injury several months ago while benching 275. Luckily he survived, but he's now suing the school for negligence saying a member of the training staff knocked the bar out of his hands

Don't put the pegs on the weights so you can slide them off if you get stuck.

One of my mates went to the gym by himself the other day, he was doing bench and asked a random guy to spot, this guy had never spotted anyone before and dropped the weight before he was ready and strained his rotator cuff.
So if you need a spot dont just ask anyone, ask someone who knows what they are doing.
