Trying to help my WIFE Lose weight

HI everyone I need a little help My wife is 5,7 and 200 pounds she is very upset with her self and wants to start to work out and diet the right way. I am a regular gym guy and try my best to talk with her but i'm not sure what her calorie intake should be and what type of workout is best for her. I know this is a really wide answered question but if you ladies can point me in the right direction this would help alot . I really want my wife to feel good about herself. I was wondering if a combination of cardio like eliptical and circuit traing is the key with the right calorie intake. Any help from you lad's would be great thanks.

You sound like a nice husband who wants to help someone who wants to change (A lot of husbands here try to 'force' it on their wives so it's a bit refreshing).

At 200lbs, diet is her major problem. There's a sticky in the nutrition section for counting calories. I think someone in her position would benefit greatly from a program like weight watchers as well, if she is interested. It is going to take her quite some time but if she sticks to it, a basic lifestyle change, then she can do this. Your support is important - since you are 5'11 and 170ish, it might be easy for you to eat a burger/chips here or there without seeing the ramifications but that makes it hard on her. Have those on your work lunch or out with friends Healthy family dinners are important.

Do you have children? If so, signing up at a gym with childcare and morning/evening stroller/sling walks are great options too. Elliptical and circuit training is fine for a beginner but she would benefit from the basic compound lifts just like any other lifter.
    Current 1RM
    Squat-134lbs | Bench-80lbs | Deadlift-171.6lbs | Press-62lbs

    Goal 1RM by end 2013
    Squat-160lbs | Bench-100lbs | Deadlift-225lbs | Press-70lbs

Thanks She was doing weight watchers and was losing weight but then hit a wall and kind of got a little less focused. Our problem is I'm trying to gain weight and she is trying to lose weight. What do you think is the more important thing to do in the gym for her more cardio with a little circuit traing or more of both. I really don't want her to think that i'm pushing to hard. She likes to see quick results but I tell her slow and steady is better so that her body has a chance to get used to the weight loss. She is concerned with her looks i'm more concerned with her health. If anyone has a link to a weigh loss bigginer work out routine that would help alot Thanks for al your help.

Try to get her on weight watchers if you can afford it. However there are other alternatives out there. Sparkpeople.com makes meal plans according to the amount of weight a person would like to lose per week.

SparkPeople is a great tool. If she is tired of WW she could try TOPS.org, it is cheaper too.

She's lucky to have a husband like you and you've also been given lots of good advice. I did Weight Watchers and was losing a pound a week. The new program (points plus) is great and you can also keep track online. Also sparkpeople is another good site, it's free, and has a community/forum for its members. Also just simple calorie counting with pen and paper will work but ultimately she has to find something that she can stick with.
