Mind - blown...how do you guys give away computers, leave them open?

Saying this while I'm nearing the end of a Computer Forensics certification...

No matter what you format/delete...it's there.

If you were into CP or some odd **** 10 years ago and reformed yourself...it's there.

What do you mean it's always there? That makes no sense. What about rewriting over the data? So you're saying if you reformat install a bunch of crap and fill up the drive, then reformat, and do the whole process 5 more times (reformat then fill up), all the stuff from the first filling up of the drive will still be there? Wouldn't that mean drives would have infinite space? Like I could still find some random song or pic on a drive from 5 reformat/refills ago?

Most people seem to have no idea what happens when they delete a file. So how many people out there will have the knowledge and capability to retrieving data from a hard drive that has multiple passes written across the entire disk or magnets? It's not like you walk into someones home and find a data retrieval machine/tools sitting on their desk.

Since you are studying this, how effective is a hardware level format? By that I mean, actually running the commands from the hard drive, using the hard drives software to wipe the drive clean. Not running a format from the OS.

To really wipe a hard drive use Dariks Boot and Nuke

    http://www.dban.org/

This disk will totally destroy data on all hard drives

Once done, smash the hard drive.

That's the only way to really wipe data you don't want anyone to see

To destroy CD's and DVD's use a hammer...same for flash drives

This disk will totally destroy data on all hard drives

Once done, smash the hard drive.

That's the only way to really wipe data you don't want anyone to see

To destroy CD's and DVD's use a hammer...same for flash drives
    strong pro **** advice

Can you elaborate on the process? Or is this an application that rewrites over and over?

Wouldn't that mean drives would have infinite space? Like I could still find some random song or pic on a drive from 5 reformat/refills ago?
Lol let me rephrase that, while doing a forensic analysis on a hard drive, anything from deleted/formatted volumes, encrypted volumes, etc can still show up, granted that it's not a 100% probability. Same goes for files in unallocated space.

We are currently at the OS level, I'll be happy to bump this thread with that info come next week

The point I was generally trying to make is that given the probability of success (and if I had something to hide) I'd be pretty paranoid.

Some partitions can be rebuilt which recover's the file structure in them, etc.
The above post is a 100% complete lie

When you delete a file, you're just moving it somewhere else. It's like a dump in a city...get rid of the trash but are just relocating it.
