Italy is very racist. Or maybe not racist, but just ignorant of other cultures, since in most places there are italians and no-one else.

I lived in Palermo and a friend (black english) came to visit me, and on the streets I could hear people openly calling him "chocolate, darkie, etc" - luckily he doesnt speak italian and didnt know what they were saying. I remember we were in a cafe and I noticed people staring at him, because they'd never seen a wealthy black man before (he's a banker).

My italian friends would often talk about how terrible the chinese are, or how indians are all funny, like it was no big deal. Even on tv the racism is obvious.

It's just because they have no contact with these people. It's the worst thing about Italy in my opinion. In the commercial it might look like they are disrespecting white people but trust me, the real opinion in Italy is that all black people are dangerous criminals, immigrants, and uncivilized.
