Ironically enough, deadlifts aren't necessarily a substitute for the knee curl machine because it doesn't teach the gastrocnemii and hamstrings to work in tandem to produce knee flexion. Probably some other muscles like the sartorius too.

You can stand leaning into the seated quad machine. One foot stays on the ground and the other leg curls up. You'll be facing the opposite way as normal, standing, and bracing yourself on the seat.

I do that whenever there's not a standing ham machine around.

I just realized, would it be possible to use a leg extension as a lying bent-hip knee curl machine? That could stretch the hamstring better right? Not sure, trying to picture this.

Unless it is obvious to anyone who isn't blind that you lift weights, you might still benefit from a little more attention to big basic barbell exercises for enough reps:).

It doesn't work the hamstring as well across the same joint tho. Not a good substitute.

If you must do them you can use the leg extention machine. Just put the bar all the way to the bottom, face the machine and curl.
