So every weekend or so there's free classes where people just go and learn stuff in an informal environment around where I live, and I practiced the hell out of this one song that was assigned last week. I could nail it 100% no problem, but when class starts and we were individually presenting I kept getting psyched out and messing up, until I finally had to read the notes to play. Why was this?

yup. hate to say it but you may not have been as prepared as you thought you were. give it another few weeks of practice (and I mean solid practice, not once or twice a day) and even through performance anxiety you'll pull it off. I'm in uni for music and we prepare 10-20 pieces for our year end recital 4-6 hours a day for 8 months before it's performance ready. more goes into it than just memorization and overcoming anxiety with "autopilot" playing, most of that time is spent polishing and creating subtext through dynamics and other tonal shaping methods so it doesn't sound mechanical and boring
this is a good example of a piece that I played a few years ago, polished and exceptionally interpreted. clear separation between melody and harmony voices, despite being played on the same guitar*** Misc Cigar Crew ***

I always had butterflies before a gig, so I always wanted to be the one to play the opening intro bars before the song to get the band going.
The simple chord progressions were too easy but by the time the rest of the band kicked in, I was good to go.lift big 2 get big

my new bass rig
Warwick (2011) pro series thumb bass (BEADG tuning)
Mark Bass 104hr, 800Wt cab
Mark Bass Little Mark 250 head
NYC tech21 Sansamp bass driver
the tone is fuking smashing. I play using my fingers and its so incredibly grindy. i tried with a pick last jam session but i just cant feel it :/
I feel like recording a tone demo, just to show people you dont need super expensive gear to get a great sound. I use to play a Ampeg svt3 pro ($2.9k head) and my new mark bass ($700) and a sansamp pedal ($250) smashes it out of the water.

I would bust a nut if one of you guitar wizards could tab out these two riffs for me
the intro riff and the riff it leads into that starts 35 seconds in, thanks!

sounds pretty simple. you're downtuning to dropped D and using what sounds like the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and maybe 6th frets all in root position power chords. just a minor harmonic scale pattern

quick question guys,
have played bass for around 6 years, had an acoustic guitar for awhile too
just recently bought a used ltd m-50 online from guitar center and i just got it today, however it wont stay in tune. any ideas on what the problem is? im assuming it may just need new strings (hopefully)?Chicago Bulls Crew

if it's a shoddy tremolo bridge system, you're going to have a tough time staying in tune. if my hunch is correct and you do have a trem bridge, it's also going to be rather difficult to change your strings.. there's a bit of a learning curve with those. I avoid trem/floating bridges myself, mostly because stock guitars that come with alleged floyd rose systems need to be upgraded in order to stay in tune. the pros that wank around with their whammy bars are using top of the line bridge systems that allow them to stay in tune the whole time

tons but from my experience I would strictly avoid trem/floating bridge systems. they're too unreliable at low prices, at least that's how my experience has been. I stick to fixed because they're more reliable and easier to change strings on. do some price checking on sweetwater and musiciansfriend, then check out some of the reviews on ultimate-guitar.com
the most important part, I think, of buying a guitar is to play before you buy. a guitar rated 10/10 by 100 people could play like total chit in your hands for a variety of reasons*** Misc Cigar Crew ***

^why not go for a GS brah?
Got another question, if the individual notes are in the chord anyway, can you just play whatever chord you want so long as the melody notes are in the chords?

GS is a lot more expensive (brand new I think they are $3.5k-$4k in Aus). Finished school last November and parents aren't going to buy me a new guitar so GS mini was the best I could afford (didn't want to buy a cheap, poor quality guitar).
Do you mean can you play the chord instead of finger picking the strings individually?

interesting concept but I can already play every song in the game
edit the improv with a band looks really really cool. might be worth purchasing just for that
the technology behind the dynamic band is incredible
not great phrasing but the band keeps at it the whole time. I'm seriously close to buying just because of this, lol
except for the connection failure lolwhatLast edited by iTzDevo; 04-03-2014 at 09:51 AM.

Sometimes, but not generally speaking. if you're playing in E and the melody is F#, you could get away with F#minor instead of B7. If you tried to play a D chord, it's not going to work out very well.
Sometimes, if the same melody note repeats, you can use it as a pedal note to get some interesting harmonies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedal_point

Was wondering if anyone here could help me.
I'm trying to learn to sing & play a song but the top notes of the song are outside of my vocal range so I want to transcribe the vocal part lower to be within my range, how do I make sure I'm choosing the right notes?
Does this have to do with keys or scales? Just need to know what part of music theory is applied here so I can go do some research on it.-Crohn's Disease crew

Well there is music theory and there is the fukking around trial and error way.
Start with the guitar at half a step down and sing the song, then use a capo and move down playing the same version of the song but half a step up each time (moving one fret at a time) until you get to the key that suits your voice the best. If you don't have a capo just use Guitar Pro or UG to transcribe the chords up or down (you can easily do it manually by counting frets but guitar pro can instantly transcribe the whole song for you).

I don't know the proper terms but can't I change the notes on the vocals without changing the instrumentals and still harmonize with the guitar?
I know the original artist himself does this in acoustic performances, he sings the chorus much lower but it still sounds 'right.'-Crohn's Disease crew
