    10mg Melatonin Too much?

Being a night owl I usually stay up way too late even though I work at 6:30 AM. Normal bed time for me is around 1AM at the earliest, and I usually get around 4-5 hours of sleep a night during the weekdays if I am lucky.

First problem...always tired in the morning, 2nd problem, every one says you need a lot of sleep if you want to recover and gain which is what I am trying to do right now.

I'm pretty resistant to sleep aids also, if I want a Tylenol PM to effect me I usually have to take about 3-4 of 'em on an empty stomach.

Reading about Melatonin on BB.com many people are only suggesting 3mg, so if I have never tried the stuff would 10mg knock me on my ass pretty quick or what? Just bought some tonight because that is all they had in stock at the time. Thanks for any responses much appreciated !

1mg is all you need. it has about 30% oral bio availability, and 300mcg is an efficacious dose. So 1g does you good.

More does not equal better with melatonin, and taking over 5g usually leads to sleep problems, such as waking up frequently, waking up with headaches / pressure in your head / pressure behind your eyes / extremely bloodshot eyes and dilated pupils, and feeling very groggy and tired in the morning.

melatonin is not a sedative, it's a sleep aid that works naturally with your body.

No, you are fine. I take up to 18 mg if I am too strung out to sleep. Haven't needed to go beyond that but I have heard of airline pilots taking 25 mg. Just don't become reliant on it, if you take a dose that high every night before bed you will have trouble sleeping without it.

Edit: I feel I should clarify this is not my normal dose. Normally I use 6mg with or without benadryl if I think I need a little extra help getting to sleep.

Guess I'll be cutting these bad boys in quarters to see what effects it has on me 'til I can determine the dose that seems effective.

10mg?! You said you're a night owl, what happens when you try to go to bed at a reasonable hour? How's your sleep hygiene?

If I try to go to bed at a reasonable hour I'll just lie in bed and end up staying awake later than I normally would. Unless It is a weekend of course, then I usually end up crashing hard way early which sucks since weekends are the days off and all. Funny how that works. Oh and it's Spring Valley Time Released if that matters at all.

If you try you can change your circadian rhythm, and the melatonin can definitely help you with that. Try going to bed early for a few days in a row, your body should become accustomed to that time after a while.

Stick to a regular sleep schedule---even on weekends.
Exercise regularly---avoid exercise in the late evening.
Go to bed only when sleepy.
Put your worries away when you go to bed.
Do something relaxing and enjoyable before bedtime.
Make your bedroom quiet and comfortable.
Avoid large meals just before bedtime.
Use your bedroom only for sleep and sexual activity.
If you cannot sleep within 15 to 20 minutes get up and go to another room. Return to bed only when drowsy.
    Remove the clock from eyesight.
Do not nap during the day. If you must nap, limit it to 30 minutes in the early afternoon.
Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine use i the evening.
    Avoid frequent use of sedatives.
Schedule outdoor time at the same time each day.
Avoid bright lights (e.g. from TV, computers, video games) before bed.
Adapted from Jermain DM. Sleep disorders. PSAP. 1995:139-154

I know some of these are pretty common sense but it does help. I had insomnia problems also but incorporating some of these principles has helped me. Highest dose of melatonin i've ever seen recommended was 30mg by an oncologist....but he was kinda nuts. If I were you, I would try using 3mg first.

I double on on 3mg tablets... so 6mg total. It works pretty good. It doesn't "drug you up" or anything. I like it because you don't get that hangover feeling like other OTC sleep aids.

I am an awful sleeper... I used to have a script for ****** but the sleepwalking weirded me out so I stopped taking it and switched to melatonin. Like you, I figured the more the better, but that really isn't the case. Taking more than 1g usually made me fall asleep quicker, but I almost always woke up in the middle of the night and had to take more. Also, grogginess is very apparent the next morning. It's not a miracle drug at any dose, but 1g is plenty if you're looking to fall asleep without the melatonin "hangover" the next morning.

Sounds to me like you have/had delayed circadian rhythm. This is often caused by irregular sleeping patterns, for example going to bed at around 4 am. This condition is basically where instead of waking up alert and refreshed, then throughout the day getting more tired... you end up waking up feeling exhausted or extremely tired (it's very hard to get up sometimes) and as the day goes on, you become more awake. I currently have this and am trying to get it in check. One of the ways to get it back in check is to set a bed time and going to bed at the set time. Don't stray from the time you've set... eventually it will become easier, it just takes a while. 1 Mg Melatonin doesn't work much for me... lowest I like to take is a 5 Mg, I might try 10 Mg, but not sure yet. And from what I understand, you can take much more than 10-15 Mg of it as it is something that our body produces naturally. Just don't let yourself become dependent on it.

    no not too much.

probably more than you need, but studies have shown you can tolerate 20-30mg+ doses

Go talk to your doctor and see if he can suggest something. Melatonin didnt work for me very well so I got a prescription for trazodone which works quite well.

Way too much. 3-5mg, tops. And the more frequently you take it, the less helpful it becomes over time. And higher doses have the opposite effect on sleep. You have to come off of it at some point.
