didn't see a thread like this, at least not an active one.
i've been DJing for a few years and just recently started on producing. sent my first production to be mastered and has a remix from another local producer that we'll be sending out for promos/to labels. so i'm new to everything but having tons of fun. just started two remix projects for online contests as well.
i figure the misc would be a good place to bounce ideas off each other/get feedback as well as discuss techniques/technical jibberish. any takers?

I am still not sure where samples come in exactly? I assumed that was like cheating for people who didn't wanna take the time to make their own stuff but I also don't know anything lol! I got Sylenth 1 and NI Massive, are there any others I should be looking into for VST's? I actually used Sylenth 1 in the one I posted if you can tell, the 4 beat synths in the semi background are Sylenth 1 synths with about 60 seconds of tweaking and more of not knowing what I'm doing and just experimenting lol!
I just can't believe the feeling I'm getting doing this, it's like the feeling a crackhead of 20 years gets the first day he was introduced to crack! I just feel like I'm reborn or something it really is f'ing crazy and feels kind of weird! Just a whole nother world of awesomeness I never knew existed.

sylenth1 is great. dont just get massive from NI though, get all of komplete 7. thats an army of vsts and plugins.
i also suggest reading up on EQing and maybe getting your hands on fabfilter pro-q - awesome EQing plugin that's really easy to use.
as for the samples, theres no reason in cheating yourself out of great samples to use for percussion at least. most percussion you hear isnt synthesized or live-samples, they're mostly re-used and layered to make the sound you hear.New Jersey Crew (973)

yea I need to get a desktop or something, I'm using a macbook pro and all I got is a windows formatted 1 tb harddrive that is slow as all hell when trying to read off of the mac. What kind of PC power do you need to produce music with Ableton and the such without hangups and freezing? Are computer built for music production going to be as expensive as some gamer computer? (I'm assuming less $$$ spent on graphics, but much more on audio related things)

It all depends on how many instances/patches you have loaded simultaneously. You could probably get away with using it on a mediocre computer if you're only running one instance with maybe a few patches loaded.
It can get pretty demanding if you want it to, it's all in how you use it.
lol
well, not all people who make music at their PC are making beeping sounds with pirated software.
but yeah, I tend to agree with you when people start talking about making 'beats'. that term in itself makes me lol.

Well, it's usually samples used as loops (samples that are usually one or more bars in length set to repeat) where that's the case. I don't use and drum loops, but everything I use for percussion is samples arranged by myself. The more patterns you create on your own, the more unique your sound will be. If you're just trying to throw crap together and sound like everyone else so you can call yourself a "producer," then loop the f*ck out of everything, but if you want to get serious about it, dig in and mess with your own patterns until your brain is mush.

Strong closed-mindedness ITT. Eventually people will learn.
OP, I'm curious about the mastering process you went through. Did you just send the files over to a studio for a fee or whatever? I've got a **** ton of tracks, but haven't really thought about the mastering side of it yet or anything since I've mainly been doing it for myself more than anything at this point.
Also, what kind of speakers/headphones do you recommend? I'm always hearing different **** on my mixes depending on what headphones I use. What do you recommend for mixing/EQing with?

i have some VERY basic mastering knowledge. the video i posted the guy does the mastering himself. his final version is much more clean. however, im a noob with lack of great speakers to master on so yeah i paid for mastering by a studio engineer
if you want to master things yourself, you NEED to use speakers. good ones at that, or else you wont catch everything or hear all the frequencies. that's why you keep hearing different things - you arent hearing everything in headphones.
beyond that, i'd look into iZotope's Ozone for basic mastering. some really cool stuff and even some decent presets that could give your track some nice sound with some tweaking.New Jersey Crew (973)
