i wouldnt recommend starting in protools to produce edm. although it can be done its mostly focused on recording/mixing audio. FL studio is a decent start, i always recommend trying the main DAW programs for a two week trial and seeing which one agrees with your personal workflow. i tried fl studio and hated it, but ableton and i are totally meant for each other

would the style of music i want to make influence that decision? I already have FL studio installed but I wouldn't mind trying something new. Which are the big ones?
Also which website/youtube channel has a great guide to starting? I only know the very basics of the interface of FL StudioHe who hesitates is lost

Try out each of them tbh. Pretty sure you can get trial versions of Ableton, Logic and FL (or piratebay them). Then carry on with whichever feels most intuitive for you.
Eventually you might start using different DAWs for different projects anyway. They all have certain advantages and disadvantages.
^
Pro Tools is a studio industry standard. Very good for professional recording, mixing and mastering. Downside is it has a steeper learning curve. Wouldn't recommend it when you're starting out tbh.
Ableton is great for Live performance, loop based music (EDM is exactly that), and in my opinion the easiest to learn to use. It also has more options than mosts for plugins, and can itself be used as a plugin. Can suffer a bit in sound quality though, particularly when you're 'warping' samples to match the BPM.
Logic is similar to Pro Tools, albeit a bit easier to learn. It's like the Photoshop of DAW's, with tons of shortcuts and hidden functionalities. The plugins it comes shipped with are all really good, and it's good for just about any kind of music. Sound quality is good, and it would definitely be my second choice in DAW after Ableton.
FL Studio, Audiomulch, Cubase and Reason are also viable options, but I don't have much experience with them. Although if you want to try a different approach to composition, Reason might be something to look at. It basically emulates a real analog studio, so you can rewire synths, plug effect modules in manually, etc. More of a 'tactile' way of working.
http://www.sonicacademy.com/ is a reasonable resource. However, don't take their music theory videos for granted. They have a LOT of errors in those. Use their videos to help understand how dance music is composed, but don't follow the tutorials slavishly with your own tracks.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dance-Music-...ref=pd_sim_b_2
That book is also worth a read. Covers many aspects of production. The genre-focused sections might not be up to date, but they cover the foundations on which modern genres were built. Also should help a little bit with the music theory behind it all. There are PDFs floating about on the usual sites too.Last edited by Aisha808; 06-25-2013 at 06:58 PM.

Has a pretty old-school summer vibe to it, that said I think it could benefit from a strong melody somewhere.
It could use a bit more of low end. I think I can hear a sub in there (using headphones atm so I'm not entirely sure) but it seems to be an octave too low.
This is really good dude, I love that lead instrument.

Finished creating my very first track!
I kept the 138bpm for the trance feel.

yeah I've got to know one of the local resident DJs around here and I asked him if I could remix one of his tracks that his producer made. SOOOO
I managed to make a House song with very heavy trance elements thrown in.
It's a free download btw

Sup brahs, I just started "producing" trance, as I've only listened to it for a few months now. I finished my first WIP a few mins ago and would like to hear your opinions. Disclaimer though: I have no idea what I'm doing in regards to mixing the actual track, and I have a ton to learn. So if anyone has any basic advice/rules of thumb that I should build on, I'd love to hear it.
Here's the track https://soundcloud.com/minorlive/eskay-1st-wip
I have no idea why it's so quiet, maybe the master level was too low when I exported?fuark

I would start by searching youtube for "master chain" to see what sort of things most people use.. usually a mid/side EQ, multiband compressor, sometimes a maximizer, and something for the stereo field..
I think you might have some sort of compressor or limiter set too low.. you can hear it release at 1:02-1:03.. It would have been nice it hear some brighter sounds in there as well. Overall good sounds.. your own synths?
well put together, vocals and synths sound good together, but I think I would have gone with a different hihat. that one feels a little brash
great for a first track! the mix/master looks and sounds really tight too. I would have liked for that sound at 5:20 to come in sooner though
----------- I picked up working on this again.. gonna have a friend collab on it later, but 90% finished on my end

Yea I'm still trying to get used to EQing hi hats, glad you liked it, I talked to the guys who did the original and they liked it a lot so I was really happy last night. That girl who's the singer is still in High School and she doesn't even look like it and she's hot as hellllll.
On your track, imo the kick could be a little stronger. What genre is it? Chillstep? I had this idea to while I was listening to it. Maybe you could do some crazy panning with that synth stab that starts at :30 seconds.*rescued two dogs crew

something i've been working on this morning, went for a bit of a summer vibe and it's got a long way to go but I like the chords and think the ideas alright. vocal is kind of meh imo, think i'm going to look around a few remix comps and choose something that I think would be cool to remix and spend some time working on a decent version. anyway have a listen:
