Sorry in advance about the long read, The main question I'm asking is near the bottom, and I did a point sum up.
About a year and a half ago, closer to two, either during db bench or machine fly I felt a pain in my shoulder, there was a small crack that went with it. I stopped doing whatever I was doing and tried to stretch out my shoulder and every time I raised my arm up and down (elbow pointing out to side, hand by shoulder) I could feel a crack, same when I did windmills. These cracks didn't hurt but were very annoying. However, since I wasn't thinking I dismissed it and the pain slowly, very slowly, started to grow. I did find that if I positioned my shoulder just right the pain would be less instense or non existent, so that's what I did.
I finally got feed up and went to my doctor and all she did was listen to what i said and poked my shoulder once or twice and gave me anti inflammatories, the whole visit took less then 5 mins. The pain did go down after taking them but it didn't go away completely. When they ran out I still had very minor discomfort but it didn't really affect my training, and I started working on my RC and the pain never increased.
Then cause of school I got out of the grove of working out and stopped going for 2 months. When I started up again no pain and I was super happy and made sure to be careful about my shoulder. Up until two weeks ago I was pain free enjoying my workouts, being very careful about form and not lifting more then I could do. So I've read alot of the shoulder injuries on here and inflammation seems to fit the best.
However, what I find weird is that when I run on the treadmill, just started this year, after I'm done my shoulder hurts and its a pulsating pain and I think it's matching my heartbeat. This is only when I work out my shoulders, or indirectly work them ie bench. This pain feels different from the pain I'd feel from flies or bench.
I'm taking it easy for the rest of this week, icing the shoulder whenever I can. Would inflammation cause this as well? Also just to note, it's the right shoulder, I am right handed, I work at a library and carry book usually on my right side. I can understand if it's just over use and the tendons are mad at me but I work 9 hours a week, and I prob only put away books for a third of that time.
So to sum up;
* Had similar situtation before, didn't rest got worse
* Doctor gave me anti inflammitories, helped but didn't get rid of pain
* Stopped working out for a few months, pain disapeared
* Pain started up again, its minor still
* Shoulder hurt during cardio, pulsating pain seems to match heartbeat
* Is the pain caused by inflammation?

My first thought is go to a doctor who will take the time to go through the series of tests to check pain through various movements (rotation, abduction, adduction, forearm flexion, etc.) and check shoulder stability. No matter whom you go to, the first course of treatment will likely be the same -- very conservative with NSAIDs, stretching, and time off. It's just protocol. They might also order an x-ray to check for any gross bony abnormalities or contributing factors (e.g., AC joint, hooked acromion). If it continues to get worse then you'll have to return at which point they'll likely dig deeper with an MRI w or w/o contrast. But, to get on a course of proper treatment I think you need to see an orthopedic specialist who will take your problem seriously and follow you throughout the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery phases with diligence.
I would continue to focus on proper stretching (of the RC itself) and strengthening and focus on posture. If you have any tendencies to hunch your shoulders or slump in the car, in front of the computer, or wherever, this can make things worse. Good shoulders-back posture at all times in addition to _working your puller muscles_ (back) will help maintain proper alignment of the structures within the joint.Last edited by mslman71; 02-03-2011 at 07:17 AM. Shoulders are so complex and often more than ONE thing is wrong with them. So what is okay for me is not good for the next person. You have to find out what works for you and stick with it. I can do almost any pull exercise and am getting back slowly into the push ones.
You can double up on Aleve and that's exactly what the prescription strength pills are. You should get a real diagnosis to see what's causing the pain.

Well I went to the doctors last Monday, not for the shoulder but because I was sick, but I did tell her about my shoulder. She said it was just inflammation and that I should rest it and if it didn't get better to come back and then she'd either give me anti inflammatorys or start some PT. I looked around for aleve but no store has it. Are there any specific exercises or stretches that will help decrease inflammation in the future?

I finally got some aleve today, but I have a question about it, do I take it everyday even if I don't feel shoulder pain ( most days since it only hurts when its worked) or only days I work out or plan to work out? Also I'm wondering should I start off with just one a day and see if I need to change it to two a day or just do two a day.
