And then there are me and my numerous colleagues who actually measure patients insulin levels after they consume 3 liters of diet soda and see a spike! My dad for crying out loud is a type 1 diabetic. Besides, never once did I say aspartame was the sole contributor of obesity in the U.S., but it is most defnintely is a contributor. If you ever have the chance, pick up "Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills" written by a well-known neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock. Well-written, well-cited, and well-documented............

Also, this is from a new article about that Fowler review (even she doesn't necessarily agree with you, yet you cite her):
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,159579,00.html
Diet Soda No Smoking Gun
Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.
"One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda," Fowler suggests. "But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity."
Why? Nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, puts it in a nutshell.
"You have to look at what's on your plate, not just what's in your glass," Bonci tells WebMD.
People often mistake diet drinks for diets, says Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and nutrition consultant to college and professional sports teams and to the Pittsburgh Ballet.
"A lot of people say, 'I am drinking a diet soft drink because that is better for me. But soft drinks by themselves are not the root of America's obesity problem," she says. "You can't go into a fast-food restaurant and say, 'Oh, it's OK because I had diet soda.' If you don't do anything else but switch to a diet soft drink, you are not going to lose weight."Latest Reviews:

Interestingly enough on another board a guy tested his blood sugar throughout a 2 day period. Ironically enough, sugar free gum containing artificial sweetener consistantly increased his blood sugar level. Was it enough to make a difference...i dunno.
It was interesting data though.
The thing that gets me is there is an overall lack of focus on nutrition that is very prevalent here with some people. Comments like it doesnt matter as long as you hit your macros etc...it does matter. Its basic nutrition...due to the added stress we place on our bodies IMO we should pay more attention to nutrition - not less and make silly statements like that. Everyone knows a nutrient filled diet is best for overall health and body function. IMO even more so when placing added stress on the body like we do. Nutrients do not consist soley of vitamins - you cant supplement them all.
Where does this fit in here - well im sure an occasional diet soda wont hurt you...but i feel its prob not prudent to replace a large portion of your fluid intake with a beverage filled with artificial colors , sweetners and preservatives. Also of note if on a CKD some people have difficulty achieving ketosis while taking in citric acid. A main ingredient in diet sodas.
Thats my opinioin.Last edited by jimbb4life; 02-09-2011 at 09:07 AM.

don't really feel like getting into the argument about diet soda, but as far as sugar free gum, it will always affect blood sugar because it contains sugar alcohols, which have significant calories (unlike sucralose and aspartame). just to address that one point.

I used to drink sodas all the time when I was younger. I love me some Dr. Pepper and Root Beer. But even if they're diet drinks, they're still not as healthy as water. To me its all about making it a habit. I've gotten into the habit of drinking water all the time, and its stuck. All I drink is water, juice, and milk. But every now and then I'll have a soda. Lol it hits me and almost feels kinda like a buzz cause I never drink them anymore.

xylitol - 2.6 cal per gram , gi of 7 ..little to no measurable effects on blood sugar levels.
Either way i just thought his log was interesting.
I also remember reading somewhere about aspartame exerting some effect on feedback loop and causing increased carb cravings. I dunno ...thats sketchy...and i dont remeber all i read..source ...etc...which is why i didnt mention it.
Eh whatever i stand by my opinion in my original post. Just a couple points of note.
