In response to the Japanese invasion of China, the United States increased military and financial aid to the Chinese and cut off exports of oil and other raw materials to Japan. This embargo was viewed by the Japanese as a direct threat to their national security and decided to seize and conquer other Asian and Pacific area territories that were rich in oil and the natural resources that Japan did not possess. You guys make it sound like ''herp derp, Japan attacked us for no reason whatsoever!''

Because killing the same number of people over time with many conventional bombs wouldn't have been as intimidating and the Japanese wouldn't have surrendered. Better to kill 300,000 in two shots than 1,000,000+ over months of continued war. And, needless to say, Japan actually attacked us. It wasn't remotely barbaric in the context of a pre-existing war.

The problem is when someone takes it on his own hands to make the choice of who gets to live and who gets to die, when he has absolutely no right at all to make such choice.

Lets say someone points a gun to your mother's head and another gun to another guy's both father and mother, and he asks you that he can kill either your mother or both the stranger's parents. Would you honestly tell him to kill your mother because one innocent death is better than two?

Mind = blown at how many people base their WW2 history knowledge off of what they saw in Pearl Harbor and Saving Private Ryan.

You can go in circles for days about whether or not it was necessary or not to use atomic weapons, you will never be able to say YES IT WAS NECESSARY or NO IT WAS NECESSARY.

The decision to drop the bomb was both 1) relative 2) based on recent history which both pointed Truman to making the best decision at the time.

Japan was well documented in both their brutal war time tactics and a complete unwillingness to surrender and fight to the last man.

If you were the commander and chief of the US and had a tool at your disposal to end a brutal war in one swoop, then not only is it your duty to your country to strongly consider it, but your duty to every country involved in the war to weigh the options and in this case at the time it made the most sense.

It was the only way to defeat the ethos of the Japanes Military. Their culture is family oriented, it is about the legacy of your family, therefore you have to hit them where it hurts them, their families/civilians. Ontop of that the bombs severely damaged the supply lines and infrastructure that was fueling their continued campaign. In case you dont recall, the Japanese used suicide tactics through Kamikazies, Banzi Charges, and mass Suicide. The honor was dying for you country. The Imperial Japanese were not an army that would surrender, they would die fighting or kill them selves. Watch Letter from Iwo Jima and you will get an idea about what they did. Pluse, as said before the casualties from the bombs were peanuts compared to if we invaded the Japanese Islands (both sides taken into account).

And dont argue that by taking innocent lives your immoral. Because the reality was that if the Japanese, the Nazis, The Brits, the Russians, and the US were in development of new technological weaponst that would have greatly turned the tide of the war. The US just demonstrated its new technological advancements. The reality is that if the Japanese could have done what we did to them, they would have.

In desperate times such as WWII, immoral deeds were the only means to prevent immoral deeds.

Not to mention that is showed the power and technology that was coming from War Machine America. Forever did it change war bro.
