, you will lose weight as your body begins to eat into your healthy lean body tissue (muscles, bones and organs) in order to find a source of energy for daily living. It will not, however, cause you to lose fat.Progress=Lifting Heavier

I like to share my experience as I tried the detox diet using lemon, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper for 7 days. Every morning I would drink a glass of water with epson salt to have a bowel movement.
First few days, I was feeling weak and had headaches but the symptoms were subsequently decline from the fourth day onwards. I lost 3 pounds while on this diet and the weight never came back. However I watch my diet carefully and exercise regularly after the detox.
I do not advise anyone to use this diet to lose weight, it is more for cleansing the colon and eliminating the toxins from the body. The detox has improved my concentration and increased my energy. The eye sees a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination awake.

Explain to me the physiology of this "detox". I bet you can't.
Ambiguous words like "detox" and "cleanse" paired with misinformation about these cryptic "toxins" have been used to peddle piles of worthless crap to the uninformed masses. You ask most of these suppliers what they mean from a basic biological standpoint and most all of them will hummmm and haaaahhh. The rest of them will attempt to toss up smoke and mirrors with yet more ambiguous statements salted with big words most of them don't know how to pronounce correctly.

Not shown in Table VI are numerous observations of improved abilities which are not usually considered medical improvements. These included ability to think more clearly, feeling more aware, feeling lighter, improved smell or taste, and feeling more energetic.

Placebo effect is a powerful ally to "health"-supplement suppliers. Don't you find it funny that when they do clinical trials of medications compared to a placebo that people in the placebo arm of the study experience improvements in whatever value is being measured (though to a lesser degree than whatever drug - assuming it's successful - is being evaluated)?
I found this bit funny:
In addition to the experimental group, a control group of nineteen individuals was accepted on a first application
basis. Initial interviews were used to collect demographic data and administer intelligence and psychological tests.
They received no special instructions on diet, exercise, vitamins or any activities and were simply tested and
retested three weeks later to determine any variance on repeat intelligence testing over this short time period.Last edited by msm00b; 01-26-2011 at 10:51 AM.

Reminds me of those ads/products that talk about colon cleansing. Dr Natura's I think? The one where people show some nasty stuff coming out of their bodies and how it detoxed them.
People dont realize the supplements they are giving you is causing that nasty stuff to come out. Great marketing though on their part.
Bottle of Gatorade, Miralax and you will be clean in a single day. Got a colonoscopy a few months back (turning the big 40!) and the pictures came back perfectly clean. Not a spec of residual food in my intestines. I was also 5 lbs lighter the next day! haha

The purpose of this paper is to present clinically observed physiological and psychological changes in subjects who underwent a comprehensive extrarenal excretion regimen intended to remove lipophilics and other xenobiotics from the body. This study was developed to evaluate clinical manifestations associated with the regimen, and is preliminary to a study of its efficacy.
Physiological measures indicate a generally beneficial result from the regimen. Table I presents the post regimen means and mean changes of specific measures. As expected, weight did not change appreciably. However, there were dramatic changes in blood pressure, especially for individuals whose preregimen levels were greater than
either 140 mm systolic or 90 mm diastolic. These high blood pressure reductions averaged 30.8 mm systolic and 23.3 mm diastolic.
Cholesterol and triglyceride levels also changed, although in different ways. On average, there was an 11 percent reduction in cholesterol levels, with most of this change reflected in individuals with high pre-regimen levels. The eye sees a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination awake.

While you are on your maple syrup diet, be sure to check out ear candling.... it's hand's down the best way to remove ear wax.... lose a couple pounds doing it and improve your hearing too!
(Actually had a friend believe in this garbage and try and sell me on it. Never laughed in someone's face so hard..)A diet isn't punishment. A diet is a way to reward your body with the wholesome, nutritious food that it needs. Your body composition is a direct reflection of what you put in your mouth.

please send her here quick and make her read the following http://josepharcita.blogspot.com/201...-body-fat.html
Pitfall 2.) You Are Not Eating Enough
"What's the point of dieting... I will just gain it all back once I stop dieting..." or "I'm going to go on a water-fast in order to lose body-fat!!" Have you ever heard these words before? Have you perhaps uttered them yourself? The reason why you gain back your weight is that your caloric deficit was too large; you were not eating enough food. If you do not eat enough then your body will actually undergo a metabolic shift in which it does everything in its power to preserve body-fat and will instead convert muscle-mass into energy. Your body-fat will remain largely the same. You will still be fat, but you will just weigh less with less muscle and water... and here is the ultimate kicker: once you begin eating like you previously did, all of the water-weight that you lost (which gave the illusion of fat-loss) will instantly rejoin you and, even worse, your now shifted super-catabolic metabolism will seize this new influx of calories and convert as much of these calories as it possibly can into fat. This is why obsessing solely about weight unintelligibly very often leads to an eventual increase in body-fat.
Just to be perfectly clear, if your caloric deficit is too large:
1. You will enter a metabolic shift that preserves fat and extracts muscle-mass for energy.
2. You will quickly lose large amounts of water which will give the illusion of fat-loss.
3. As soon as you return to your regular diet you will instantly regain your lost water, and since your metabolism is still shifted you will gain an obscene amount of fat.
4. By not eating enough, all you will ultimately do is gain fat and lose muscle.
5. Still think you can cheat the system and just not eat anything in order to lose fat?
And just to cover all of my bases and to convince you fully: It's true that if you perform an extreme fast for a prolonged period of time then eventually your body will be forced to extract fats for energy once muscle-mass becomes sparse, so yes fasting eventually leads to fat-loss, but why on earth would you want to achieve fat-loss by doing something so harmful and backwards? Ignoring all of the obvious health-risks, it takes so much more needless time, effort, and pain; and you still probably won't lose as much body-fat as you could have if you lost body-fat properly (and you would lose the fat at a much more rapid pace under a proper diet). In my experience with certain individuals who like to create science out of thin air, this probably still will not deter some people from undergoing a water-fast, but for those of you who actually want to rid yourself of body-fat quickly, effectively, and permanently, please eat enough food.
srs. send her this. post results.Last edited by Arcita; 01-26-2011 at 11:35 AM.

They compared more than a hundred people who they forced to be extremely physically active against less than 20 people who did absolutely nothing for 3 weeks. Was it the exercise? Was it placebo effect? Was it the detox? Was it a combination of the above? Nobody knows because the study was poorly designed and poorly executed ... written by a bunch of pseudo-scientists who likely had an agenda (and a product to peddle to the masses).
They should have structured the study so that the control arm was much more similar to the experimental one. As is, they're trying to compare apples to horse turds.
However, there were dramatic changes in blood pressure, especially for individuals whose preregimen levels were greater than either 140 mm systolic or 90 mm diastolic. These high blood pressure reductions averaged 30.8 mm systolic and 23.3 mm diastolic.
Exercise ... exercise ... exercise ...
On average, there was an 11 percent reduction in cholesterol levels, with most of this change reflected in individuals with high pre-regimen levels.

Personally, I did experience a feeling of well being after the diet and my cardio session increased by 10 minutes. This diet was never meant for losing weight, calculating your calorie needs and macronutrients is still the way to lose fat.

I bought into this unfortunately before I learned the importance of weight training. I can't believe I put my body through this. Started to have heart palpitations towards the end. Not to mention the drink was absolutely disgusting and the salt water cleanse makes you want to vomit.
Screw this noise, I'm goin to the gym

as far as I'm aware, clinical studies have proven that ALL calorie restricted diets, regardless of stupidity, will work. Doesn't matter if your 800 calories per day are made up of lemon juice, maple syrup, carrots etc. As far as 'detoxing' goes, show me the science behind it and I'll believe it. The reality is that there is no peer reviewed research to support the notion that the body stores toxins which need to be purged by fasting, or going on a liquid diet, in a normal person's case. But hey, alot of people have made alot of money of purporting the concept, and we're in the middle of a recession and all...
I'll put a fiver on her gaining all that weight back within 60 days, though. Probably a bit more too.
