Did I say I was going to hack my system to play ****ty games. How about you take a class on reading comprehension. There are plenty of uses for hacking... like the possibility of running xbmc. Oh right... herp derp, hacking must mean that I'll be pirating. Sense, you apparently lack them, bro. And like it matters that it got hacked? Sony will just do what MSFT has been doing with their piracy, ban the console.

Therein lies the problem. I don't know if it's linked, it's just a theory, but there's a reason why most games are just rehashes and sequels of other games, even if not the same series (i.e. GOW3, Dante's Inferno and the new Castlevania). The likelihood of recouping the huge investments necessary to develop a game is pretty slim, so developers get conservative, and are unlikely to invest in a novel concept. This much is pretty much a given.
And before you ask, my friend works in Business Development at Capcom, so this is not something I'm puling out of my ass. We started a video game site called CHV.net back in 1999, which allowed downloading of game play, FMV's, and our own video game shows over the net. Talking 500MB files, with most people downloading over 56k. We were talking about G4 and video over 3G on your phone back in 1999. I saw him a few months back and he was considering developing a cross-platform MMORPG. His estimate is $100mm to develop this game (plus servers, in-game payment system development and support), and about 4 years. The average game costs $25mm for cross-platform games, and about $40-$50mm for a game like COD4.
What I'm theorizing is that the threat of piracy contributes to the low probability of recouping an investment. It's quite possible. The number one pirated game on the XBox was Dante's Inferno, which was estimated by G4 to have been pirated 1.2 million times. In total, EA sold 1 million copies of it, as of May 11, 2010. So, instead of (at $50/game) bringing in $110 million for Dante's Inferno, EA gets $50m. If development costs were $50mm, EA broke even on DI. If even a quarter of those pirated games were purchased because pirating was broken on the Xbox, EA still gets $70mm in DI sales, a 40% ROI. Not shabby.
Of course, you could say this was because DI was a ****ty game, but it was one of the top games of 2010. And EA lost money this year. And EA is one of the largest publishers in the industry. It's not a surprise that there's so much industry consolidation going on because no longer can a small shop take the risk and make the investment to develop an unproven concept. Rather we get large shops pushing out FIFA 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011; FF123456789101212XXIII; etc etc. Of course, some games will rake in half a billion dollars (COD4) or more (WOW) but those are far and few between.
Yes, there are still excellent games out there, and there will be, but I really do believe that less risks are being taken and publishers have become more conservative, and that is to the detriment of the quality of the games that are available to us.Daily Electronic Music Enlightenment Thread - Come on Down to the Underground

well I'm not sure if it killed the psp, I think it was a failing platform before piracy.
I think piracy killed dreamcast, not solely since it was a combination of things but it was one of them. You didn't even have to do anything to the console to play backups. bootlegging didn't become a problem up until the release of cd based games. During the times of the genesis and snes it would have been damn hard for the average person to pirate those games because they were on cartridges.

This. People can say games still sold and there were still a lot of quality titles during the PS and PS2 pirating days. But just think of how many more quality titles there could have been had all those games not been pirated. Developers get more money, they'll take more risks to make something new and fresh, actually try to make a quality game. Developers lose money, you'll get mediocre games. Which is what this pirating is contributing to. It's lost potential, for future games. People will still buy games yeah, but think of all the potential developers are losing even after people still buy their games. Could be a lot more sales, and a lot more quality stuff produced. And if people weren't going to buy a game at all, then they shouldn't play it.

damn it would be nice to play some of these games I don't want to pay for because they aren't worth it. Much like music.
These instructions are too difficult for me, I need to be talked to like a retard pretty much for this stuff and I enjoy playing the few games I purchase online so I would hate to get banned from that

The logic doesn't make sense. "Damn it would be nice to play some of these games but the money isn't worth it". Lol. If it'd be nice to play them, then wouldn't that make them.... Worth it?
Anyways. I agree about the used games too. Although it isn't too bad as long as the original user payed for it instead of selling it after piracy. Also all games aren't $60 immediately. Some are $50, some $45, some $40. But yeah mostly the bigger titles are $60.

Piracy.
Haha, jk. I don't really know, but my guess is that because Madden had a lot more marketing behind it. And pricing is set at what the market can bear, at what people are willing to pay for it, and I bet you EA thought they could squeeze more out of players than Sega did.Daily Electronic Music Enlightenment Thread - Come on Down to the Underground

I f*cking hate EA, those bastards killed my favorite football game series with their monopolizing exclusive deal with the nfl, bullsh*t.
To this day NFL 2k5 sh*ts on any madden game on ps3/360.
I'm glad they are paying for it, their NBA 11 game was cancelled, and NBA 2k11 is the best basketball game I have ever played. I can't wait until a new NFL 2k game comes out

I mean I get what yall are saying, don't get me wrong. The issue is length of the games, like a 4 hour game isn't worth $60 bucks which I agree. So therefore either rent it, or just don't get it. Ya know. But games like the COD series, which you can get hours and hours of online play from, are well worth the $60.

Don't feel like checking stores often to see if they have it in stock once it drops just to rent it. I only buy 2-3 games a year because I can't self justify dropping that much money on a game that I believe I will quit after a day because its too boring. Like I said, everyone is different and people do what works best for them.

I buy cod because of the time I know I will get out of it, the only game I really like playing online. I will happily pay for games that give me hours of replay or if I play a previous version was good then I am more then likely going to buy the newest version and see how it is. Music is much the same, a bands first cd I download what I like, next cd I purchase without hearing it first if I really like that band.
