Hello,
After spending a few days here on this site, I am about to give up a firmly held theory of mine about skipping breakfast (and/or other meals) yet I'm not going to do it just yet without a bit of a fight.
I understand that it is a very popular opinion that we should never skip breakfast or other meals. Yet I have always had an intuition that maybe, this might be wrong. Before you unload on me, be sure you are not just regurgitating fitness dogma and really know what you are talking about. I have come to know that there is very little original thought in much of society. We just follow like sheep, and believe everything we read on the internet. And while there is much truth begin followed in the fitness realm, if the same societal theory holds true from other realms, then there is much spin and falsehoods present too. (Don't get me started on Atkins.) Is it at all possible, that for fat loss, it is not all that big of a deal - in fact, maybe even beneficial that one can skip a meal like breakfast - especially if not hungry?
Simple logic would tells me that if I consume less I will lose more. How is this not correct?
And on a related question - do the theories about not skipping meals have more weight while on ketosis? I can kinda buy this and see why. But still, if I'm taking in more calories from a breakfast while in ketosis - how is this better for weight loss compared to if I skip a meal and just let my body continue cleaving fat as opposed to having to metabolize more food?
Thank you!

Yeah, I think I misspoke. It's just that it is a very popular belief that one should not skip breakfast. I'm in keto and I was reading on the keto board more than once that one should eat breakfast. So I assumed this thought was aligned with the other popular thought of not skipping meals. I might have made a premature assumption that that this belief was widespread here on this site. I guess I'm wrong - and so glad to hear it!

On a related note, I know someone posted a link to LG already, but Berkhan wrote a new article just yesterday regarding post-breakfast hunger and its causation. Interesting read.
http://www.leangains.com/2012/06/why...me-hungry.html
These are the main reasons some people avoid eating early in the day - They find they're less hungry/focused on food for the majority of the day, they find it has no real effect on training intensity, it fits their convenience/work schedules, they enjoy eating large meals, etc. Nothing actually beneficial about it in terms of body composition. The important thing is that there's nothing negative to it either. Eat when you want, brah.Boston - UMass - Sales brah

^^Had to read it a couple times over to get a solid understanding, but a really good read man! When I eat breakfast before school, I always get cravings and huge hunger pangs a few hours later even though I may have had a decent meal...now I know why Might explain why I'm always so frikin tired during the afternoon too on school days.

yep, this x2
breakfast = 'break your fast since you last ate' or something along those lines.
personal preference, macros, calories are what you need to prioritize.
eat what and when its best for YOU - fitting into your schedule of course.
I dont eat 'breakfast' until the PM simply because Im not hungry in the mornings, and typically I eat something hot/spicy anyway so its not your typical 'breakfast' food.

In the context of body composition if makes no difference whatsoever. In the context of athletic performance etc, then it can be a good idea depending on the circumstances. Since we are almost always discussing nutrition in the context of body composition on this forum, then few here advocate breakfast as a must.

When you choose to eat has no relevance in relation to the position of the sun at any given time despite whatever pagan ritualist may have lead you to believe so.

I saw this in a video yesterday night and I heard even Arnold Schwarzenegger was doing it.
His name is John Romaniello. He talks about increasing testosterone in this video on YouTube by fasting breakfast meals:
" How To Naturally Increase Testosterone - With John Romaniello " - from SixpackShortcuts with Mike Chang
A quite interesting find! Look it up And remember those underlined names for further research.
I skip one hour this one first time after that I am going to build up te process by skipping an additional 30 minutes every day until I hit 12.00 noon.
Which should take about 6 days 6 x 30 minutes = 3 hours + 1 hour from day one makes a total of 4 hours fasting each morning, well if you wake up at 8.00 at least.
I've always been taking breakfast all my life. Time to switch roads for once and see what this experiment brings.
From today I'm slowly tearing down my breakfast hunger by fasting.

Much as a like IF, I would very be skeptical about any claims about it causing hormonal benefits - at least insofar as it makes a difference to body composition.
For example, growth hormone increases when you are in the fasted state but you aren't going to grow any new tissue due to the fundamental lack of energy+amino acids.

You are probably referring to population statistics where it is impossible to distinguish cause and effect.
It could be that people who are fatter are more likely to skip breakfast - and fail because they snack mid morning.
There is no physiological reason why skipping breakfast will be the cause of such problems that I know of, nor is there any data that has been show by statistical power to demonstrate such.
BTW, this thread is from 2013.

This is a rather long read, but it breaks down some of the positives and negatives of eating breakfast vs not eating breakfast (in the form of a fast)

I know for me personally as I slowly hone in on what works for me I have stopped eating breakfast. Normally I chug a protein shake in the morning have a small lunch around noon then a big dinner right before bed at like 11PM-12am. While Im sure this is not the most efficient way of doing things for me it eliminated late night binge eating since that's when i have my large meal planned anyway and im not forcing myself to eat in the morning when im not even hungry. So the net result of me keeping to my diet far outweighs any efficiency eating breakfast might give me.

I skip breakfast at breakfast time. I normally don't eat anything until 2pm sometimes 4pm and stop eating around 8pm. Just something I've been trying for a few weeks and I am enjoying it. I don't really feel hungry which is nice as I'm trying to shed a lot of weight and I hear working out fasted has benefits to it.
