    Depleting glycogen

If I run does it deplete glycogen thru my whole body or my legs only? I know working out depletes glycogen and have to keep carbs low.

muscle glycogen is burned only in the muscles that are being used, the muscle uses only the glycogen stored directly within itself.

However, running activates pretty much the entire body. You're using legs for movement, arms moving for balance, and everything else in between for stabilization, so you are using whole body glycogen to some extent.

Just trying to deplete glycogen so I can use fat instead of carbs as fuel then when I'm depleted I can enjoy my weekends out on carbs. And not worry about spilling over. Read article at simply shredded that it's a Great way to lose body fat and just in case u slip on a weekend that you'll have the empty tank of muscles to refill with glycogen when u carb up.

This isnt one of them. If you want to deplete glycogen get on some DNP lol. Joking. DNP is the most useful tool in a dieters arsenal when taken by someone who knows what they are doing. Like you said you are 19 and are in an trial and error phase. Stop that right now and learn from other peoples mistakes, you will progress much faster

You don't need to be depleted to burn fat and you don't burn enough fat during exercise to worry about how much you're burning anyway (unless you're talking about something like a 12 hour endurance event and even then the amount would be small).

Omg bigollie i generally respect your posts but look at the caliper of the OP's original message and his justification and you really suggest this person experiment with DNP?

The whole idea about depleting glycogen levels if for benefits after the workout is completed. This is why doing intensive training in short bursts twice in a day instead of one long one seems to allow you to use more fat storage for energy for regular activities while the glycogen stores are being regenerated. Your glycogen works as the catalyst to start the fat oxidization process. Which gives us the phrase "Fat burns in a carbohydrate flame". Although more test still need to be done as so many different factors play a role in optimizing results such as the amount of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers a person has, the intensity of the workout and period of time, the glycogen levels a person has stored and how in shape the person is and their fat stores. Obviously someone with alot of fat can utilize there fat stores better then someone with a single digit fat percent. Awe, the science of exercise isn't it fun. I've done some researching today and pulled some articles on this subject, like I said more studies need to be done this is why what works keeps flipping around, just like what nutrition is better and what is not. Hopefully 20 years from now they'll have a far greater knowledge and understanding on how to utilize energy stores more efficiently but I'm sure there will still be quite a debate on the matter. Best thing I see is just play around with different things if you find something that work stick with it until it stops working, I've had to switch my diet up and training a few times over the past few months due to my body adapting to what I was doing to it and seemingly hitting a wall in fat loss. Why I plan on switching things up again in a months time and then again a month after that. Anyway here's the articles I mentioned if your interested in reading. If not like I said everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no one has all the answers (I think if we did training would be a little boring) reason why I keep looking for different ideas to try, helps keep me interested like I'm my own science experiment.

    Say what?

The bro science gets better and better.
A diet isn't punishment. A diet is a way to reward your body with the wholesome, nutritious food that it needs. Your body composition is a direct reflection of what you put in your mouth.

Like I said, no one has all the answers, everyone has their own opinion, I didn't say calories in vs. calories out doesn't work just saying there are ways of optimizing it because if that was just the case I could just eat nothing but 2000 cals. of sugar and everything would work out great. Also what works for some does not necessarily work for everyone.

(I had no idea there were that many medical scientists on these forums.)
