Caffeine is fine, just don't add sugar or anything. There are some reports of artificial sweeteners kicking some people out of ketosis, but it's not really founded in science as of yet. If you can't take it straight, get it with heavy whipping cream (Make sure to ask for heavy)
"I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven one like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed."

Black coffee had been tested time and time again, it has no effect on insulin release. Adding sugar will cause spike and even some "flavored" creamers will also spike insulin. I have heard just from bro science that some artificial sweeteners have kicked then out of ketosis, but then again that's bro science and alot of people jump on other peoples band wagons without trying for themselves. Imo I think you need to take alot of artificial replacement at one time to affect anything with keto. On side note, @ resturant I ate breakfast at the creamer was normal creamer and had 2 gcarbs per lil cup..have to be carefull..not all creamers are the same..if you can do without, MAN UP AND DRINK IT BLACK: )

I drink caffeinated coffee every day with a little splenda and sugar-free creamer. I've never used ketostix but the weight has been melting off and I definitely recognize the feeling of leaving ketosis on my carb up days. For me, coffee seems to be perfectly fine.

Coffee is fine. It doesn't significantly affect ketosis at all. Also, even if it did, it doesn't matter. Stay in a caloric deficit and your body will still drop the fat.
Your body is much smarter than most people give it credit for."Arterial plaque is primarily composed of unsaturated fats particularly polyunsaturated ones." (Felton, C V, et al, Lancet, 1994, 344:1195)

My breakfast when I'm not doing a warrior keto is usually a big ol cup of coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream flavored ON 100% gold standard whey.
It tastes like God's laughter. We fight til no one can fight us
We live, and no one can stop us
We pull but we're pushed too far
And the advantage is, The bottom line is,
We never had to fight in the first place,
We only had to spit back in their face,
We won't walk alone any longer,
What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

Not entirely bro-science
Caff increases adrenaline / noradrenaline.
Adrenaline increases breakdown of liver glycogen to glucose
Glucose increases insulin
Practically, this should only occur at the beginning of the diet, or right after carb up. Further, it would be such a short term thing that you wouldn't notice it over the course of your diet.

Caffeine can affect your insulin levels....but it might just depend on the person.....Here is the quote from the Livestrong article.
"The center notes normal fasting levels are different than normal random blood glucose levels, but a normal blood glucose reading ranges from below 110 milligrams to 140 milligrams, varying throughout the day, after meals and before eating. The effects of caffeine on the bloodstream may cause a short-term rise in blood sugar and blood pressure levels, the Harvard School of Public Health reports."

If black coffee increases your blood sugar, it isn't because it is ADDING sugar to your system. It can't...there isn't any in the coffee unless you add it.
If it does increase blood sugar, it means sugar is released somewhere already in your body. Like the liver. Your muscles can then suck the sugar up (because it is free in the bloodstream).
Sounds like a win-win.
Either way, if you are in a caloric deficit, you will lose weight.

I don't know why, but when I gave up coffee for three weeks I stalled on keto weight loss.
For me, black, ground coffee is a gift from the keto gods. Before quitting sugar I was a milk and two, instant coffee man. That would make me chunder now. Since I became no-sugar adapted I can enjoy all the subtle flavours and nuances of a good black coffee.

another note for clarification not directed at anyone inparticular. Coffee is fine. Obviously you can't add sugar, if you know anything about keto this is common sense.
Artificial sweetners, won't kick you out of keto or cause any insulin spike, this has been studied extensively. Any bro science that claim that it just plain wrong. Diet soda was first created so diabetics could still drink soda without the insulin spike, but depending on what type of artificial sweetner can result in some difference. Coming off of a refeed certain AS's can blunt the return to keto, in particular acesulfame potassium comes to mind and has become a regular AS in all most all diet soda's excluding Diet Coke. Even diet pepsi has begun adding APotassium.Last edited by Bigbruiser79; 02-07-2014 at 08:14 AM. Reason: hahahaha, didn't realize I was adding to a post that has had two strong bumps
