    protein requirements and my professor

I had my ex. phys professor today tell me that bodybuilders and powerlifters only need 1.2g of protein / 1kg of body weight. The rest is useless and is had on your kidneys. He says ur wasting ur money paying for protein supplements and shouldnt take in this much protein.

So where did everyone come up with the 1g/ lb of bodyweight?

Knowledgeable sources/studies are greatly appreciated to prove him wrong!

I've read the same thing from other sources, only problem is I found research info on this is scarce. I'm inclined to believe it; however, it seems a lot easier to hit a caloric target with the addition of added protein.

Funny enough, I read a study about a month ago that had come to the conclusion that 0.76 (or 0.8 can't remember the exact number) of grams per lb of bodyweight was sufficient to support muscle development effectively.
And they did not detect any difference when the protein intake was higher than that.

I'll try to find that but I doubt I'll be able to.
