Get the money to his family brah with the quickness. You've already had a month, that's the main reason people are mad. You can't go back and fix that but you can show that your intentions were good by getting the money to his family (just do it, they'll figure out some fun way to use it) and adding in a large personal donation of your own. That's the only way you can fix this at this point. My suggestion is not to delay. At all.
