    Competition Squat Depth

    Prepping for my first competition this weekend. What angle can I get away with on squat? Are they sticklers about getting exactly parallel or will they excuse a little above (i.e. quarter to a half inch)

    You will need to CLEARLY break parallel.....the judges will need to be able to see that your hips go below your knees. There are lots of lifters that get red lighted for depth even though they may have hit parallel, it really depends on the judges, but I've found most will red light you if they aren't certain. Remember, there is no play back /slow motion review.

    Yeah, you should always be striving to get below parallel, competition or not. Otherwise you're not doing a full squat.

    Unless the judges are your relatives and the meet is just some unsanctioned local deal, it's not likely they'll allow you to "get away" with anything that doesn't closely follow what's spelled out in their federation's guidelines.

    Hip crease needs to be below the top of the knee.



    It'll also help if you can slow down your transition from descent to ascent, as it will make it easier for judges to watch for depth (compared to coming down too fast and bouncing up).

    Go in with lighter attempts you know you can sink.
    There are no "give me's" in most orgs.
    Review the org your competing in rules of all the lifts.
