is 410 pounds very much on a leg press machine?

just started getting back into weight lifting/ watching diet. last time i did leg press i was doing 5-8 reps to failure at 410pounds and felt like that was pretty good? i have a feeling people are going to say they do that for warmup set or something.

i was also wondering if i should try doing squats with that thing that has the bar on a slider so it cant go forward or backwards (what's that called). i dont think im going to do free weight squats because i workout alone and feel like im going to fall backwards or something half the time.

my leg routine has been 5 sets legs press, 5 calves, 5 hamstring curls and 5 quad extension. any advice?

If 410 lbs is what maxes you out at 8 reps and you can't do anything more, then it is great for you. It's a decent number for someone. That being said there are ppl that do 2-3 times that but who really cares. Don't worry too much what others do!

to be honest most people do not measure strength by leg press. Leg strength is measured by the squat.

learn to do squats properly from watching videos online and they are very safe, even if training alone.

also 410 pounds on a leg press depends entirely on what leg press machine; some are light some are heavy. It doesnt matter much what others as doing, as long as you personally are making progress

Ask what other people do as far as exercises or form. Comparing weights is just e-peen measuring. Be confident enough to know that your weight is right for you.

I do over 1000lbs on leg press!

But on a more serious note, I would definitely recommend the SMITH MACHINE (the sliding thing you were talking about) to get your feet & back form correct. It'll be a plus if you can move some heavy weight on that, but eventually if you'd like, you can switch back to the free weight BB squat and start with lower weight to practice form on that. (Hoollyyyy molly run-on sentence!)

Your leg routine looks simple, yet effective! I'd recommend doing calves last since it's the smaller muscle... Work on quad extensions after squats, and then hamstring curls (seated and laying) afterwards.

the "leg" is not a muscle, not trying to be a dick but i think a free weight compound movement is a better determinant of strength for all the muscle groups that make up the leg

There are many more things involved in determining squat strength than just legs. Leg press strength has less determining factors. To say leg press strength doesnt represent leg strength is retarded.

I agree with above posts. If you are maxing 410 on leg press, then awesome for you! Anyone who presses more, well, they could only max 410 at some point in their training.

Weight is relative, it is relative to your body's ability. If you are maxing there, you are doing well...and your weight will continue to go up! Dont let anyone get in the way of YOUR progress!

If you're interested in squatting, make sure you start very light. I can do 440 for a set of 20 yet I squat 185x3 heaviest.

Get the form down on squats. They are the most important exercise you can do for overall development. Use the safety bars to help catch you if you fall; you should be fine though once you get the form down. All other exercises don't come close to them.

    Squats - 3 sets
    Leg press - 3 sets
    Lunges - 2 sets
    Leg Curls - 3 sets
    Calf Raises - 4 sets

People posting leg press stats I take with a grain of salt. If you sit and watch people go "heavy" on the leg press its amazing the ROM some achieve and call it a rep. also, I will be much more impressed with 410 if you have long legs vs short powerfull pistons. So my point is dont be concerned with how much you can leg press, just get the proper form down and go from there.

Agreed, I see so many people at my gym putting up 7-8 plates on each side, and going down barely an inch.

    OP,

If you can do 410 with full ROM for up to eight reps and that's your top weight for now, then why worry about what others can do? That never made sense to me. If you're getting growth from that, then go with it.

You mentioned getting your hamstrings worked while using leg presses. If you want that, then place your feet higher on the board and push with your heels. You should lighten the weight a little and again, perfect your form.

Comparing the full squat and leg press are two different animals. If you want to get good at squatting, do squats in a power rack, start light, perfect your form. Take it from there.

And whoever said that the hack squat is good for teaching you how to barbell squat is way off. How can it when the pathway is fixed and on an angle?

Stop worrying about how hardcore 410 leg pressing is and worry about a 410 squat... or just disregard the notion there's some grand standard of Hardcore Strength and just focus on increasing your lifts every week.

Yes a lot of people would say that, no it isnt true, yes it would be beneficial to include squats.

To answer your question, relatively, for someone your size, on average,
410lbs. isn't much on the angled leg press.

I did more than that just for my calves for sets x's 30 reps
    and felt a good burn.

As mentioned in the posts above, it's not uncommon to see people press
1000+lbs. on the angled leg press because it's much easier than squats.

As also mentioned earlier, it's best to just focus on what works for you
instead of comparing yourself with others, but I can understand your desire
to see what's average to get a good idea of where you're at for your size.

Provided you keep your hands on the safety bars ready to swing them into place, if needed and use a good full range of motion,
I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to throw a few more plates up there on each side and go for at least 10 reps per set in future workouts to work the quads.

This exercise is good for your quadriceps but don't neglect your squats.
Just add some sets of alp to supplement.

Of course the good ole standard catch-all, cya phrase should apply here as well.
What works for one may not work for you, so do what works for you, etc.

But if you want an idea of if that weight is considered heavier than average for
someone your size for that exercise, I'd say not by a longshot.
