I've been taking muay thai for a year and a half now. What can I do to condition my shins for kicks?

I'vr noticed if i throw a powreful leg kick on a thai bag...even if i hit all shin i get a sharp pain in the middle of my foot...almost unbearable....makes me never want to throw them

edit--but in answer to your question...are you saying it hurts your shin when you get checked or it still hurts when you eat a leg kick

If your shins aren't conditioned after 18 months of training then you're a pussy. Drink a cup of cement.

My old gym had a sand bag for shin conditioning. It looks like a thin heavy bag filled with sand, and it you'd kick it to condition shins. You just need to deaden all the nerves in your shins.

when you check a kick you are supposed to check with the point of your knee not with your shin lulz.......what hurts me more is when i get checked and i hit there knee with the muscle right next to my shin now that hurts shin to shin not as much.....and to condition your shins hit the thai pads and a sand bag that looks like a tear drop

You don't check a kick with your knee you retard, you check it with the top part of your shin as it is the strongest part of the shin.

funny thing is the person throwing the kick is taking the brunt of the punishment, not the checker. i'd def get a bamboo stick and start tapping your shins and slowly condition them up...TAP them, dont whack them to start out with, its going to take some time.

this'll sound weird maybe, but kick a tire. Don't kick the edge, but the flat, tread area. It's tougher than a heavy bag, but gives more than the rolling pin, bamboo stick thing. You can also try checking the kicks differently (like more of an absorption spring) or just get some shin/instep guards (the grappling ones are fairly thin, so you might get better conditioning with 'em).
Most dude's I know that kick hard always wear pro guards when they spar or doing anything with a partner, so...

Your suppose to check a kick with you shin whoever said your not suppose to is a retard. As for condition just keep on checking kicks and kick really hard heavy bags. Your shins will eventually get used to them. They'll eventually have enough calcium build up that it won't hurt as much. If you run you hand down you shin it should almost feel bumpy when it's conditioned. Look at Thai's check leg kicks it barely hurts them. Kicking the side of a tire helps to. There's also a oil (forget what its called but you can rub it on your shins after to help soothe the pain. I'll try and look it up.

The actual correct way to check a kick is to actually to catch their foot/ankle, not their shin. If you check someones ankle or top of their foot, they are going to stop throwing the leg kick after 1 or 2 of those. You should work on getting your leg up and out more and also flex your shin up to add to its strength. That said, its a very hard skill to learn, I am still trying to be more consistent with actually catching the foot/ankle instead of shin on shin.

My coach suggested the tire thing too. I might give it a try. I wear shin guards when we spar and it doesn't bother me then. I know at some point down the road when I do fight without them I would like it not to be an issue.

its possible you are hitting the bag too low on your shin. I remember I was doing like 250 or so kicks on the bag and towards the middle of it i started getting this weird pain in my foot. I figured that it was just because of how many times I have been doing it at that point but then my kru pointed out that I was letting my foot hit the bag. Instead of keeping my toes pointed out so that I would just hit shin I was letting my foot swing loosely and even tho I would hit the bag with my shin, my foot (picture how you stand, it makes a 90 degree angle with your leg) would hit the bag as well and thats what was hurting me.

Thats my experience, not sure if yours is the same

cool, the tire's an old school thing I was taught and it helps if you don't wish to do the direct rolling/tapping thing with glass, wood, etc. (jury's still out on this, but there's mixed reviews on the kind of damage tapping/rolling can do. Short term it does help to desensitize nerves). What Jager said is on point too. Just watch that you don't open yourself too wide to catch the kick in the right spot and leave yourself open for a right cross or teep. i know guys that'll leg kick to get you to check so they can attack when you're off balance. Definitely flex the foot up when checking (like Jager said) because it makes the calf muscle next to the shin bone "pop" up and can absorb more than just the bone itself (plus the muscle can become conditioned quicker than the bone).

I like to do shin conditioning every month for about 45 minutes. put the shin pads on, grab a partner and just kick each other in the shins and thighs. then rest your shins. I usually kick the bag every day on top of sparring and haven't had a problem. just gotta keep kicking and make sure you are hitting on your shin and not by your ankle

personally, i dont like flexing the shin and bringing the foot up. got kicked in the toes once and couldnt walk for ages. imho, leaving the shin loose and relaxed (with the toes pointing down) absorbs enough power to reduce the kick to an insufficient level of power to cause damage.

i always think about it like this; you wantto stop a runaway car. do you stop it dead, with a brick wall, or do you takethe speed out, little by little? stopping it dead leads to a big crash, where either or both objects suffer damage BUT slowing it down with a big cushiony object reduces the force.

this is all totally personal, and my trainer has stated both ways are totally fine, so i wouldnt suggest one way or the other, do both and find whats comfortable. hell, there are more ways to do it, just play around while you spar.

Well, thats kind of also why we do it, you are providing a "cushiony" object (the shin muscle) to absorb some of the force instead of just bone on bone. Also, again, the goal is to catch your opponents ankle or foot, not go shin on shin. Shin on shin can injure you as well, but if you catch their foot its going to hurt them more than you.
