How about low ceilings? I've been to shows where the wrestlers could hardly jump off the top rope.

I agree with some people who suggested going for a shaved/buzzed haircut. Obviously like you suggested in a hair v. hair, or hair v. mask match. (culmination of a feud)

I get the impression Vince isn't big on guys in WWE having long hair (with some exceptions.) May have been a rumour but i remember reading he pushed test and christian to cut there hair. I think it would make you look like even more of a bad ass.

I understand it might be a hard decision for someone who's had long hair for an years and years. maybe someone with legit photoshop skills could give you some idea of what you might look like with shorter hair
What about facial hair? seems to be common for heels, at least traditionally.

I have trouble growing facial hair. I'm open to the shaved head idea. Somewhere down the road I'd do the hair vs hair match for the right money and the right feud. Plus I'd donate my hair to making wigs for kids with Cancer

    LOL.
I remember the old TBS studios that the NWA/WCW used to tape shows from. Road Warrior Hawk was ALWAYS bumping his head on the lights before coming off the top with his clothesline. Haha.

Great thread. Thanks for answering our questions.

What's the longest match you worked?
    Favorite all time tag team?
    New Japan or All Japan?
    WWF or NWA/WCW?
    Bret or Flair?
    Hardest move to take?
Worst blladejob you've seen in person?

    Thanks again!

Once, because the guy was untrained, horribly out of shape and couldn't/wouldn't do anything.

A few times cause someone had a poor attitude in the locker room or disrepectful toward a promoter

I'm not rolling in dough but between that and my Personal Training business, I've made enough to live on.

I make more on tours than wrestling just on weekends

I mean you would have thought they would have practised a bit prior to the match-would somebody not have thought to start with that a 6 foot 8 guy powerbombing a 5 foot 10 guy is not going to work in this cage? The woudn't Pillman or somebody in the match said this is not going to work?

Hey, Sid has a PhD is idiology. He told me so himself. Idiology is not what you think either. It's the study of the history and culture of this place called The Kingdom of ID. If he knows all about some ancient culture he can't be dumb.

When a new guy comes into wrestling and he brings unique moves with him (like his finisher is something totally new to wrestling)- do all the guys in the company have to go and learn how to take the move, or is it just the guys who will be facing him that night go out and practice for a bit?

In a company like the WWE, the wrestlers work 1 day a week, and so do they go home for the other 6 days? Ive always had the illusion that wrestlers are on the road 365 and get to see home once a month. Which doesnt make sense. It seems to me that they just take a flight home, hang out for 4 days, and fly back. Or is they actually are on the road. do they all take buses and stay in the same hotel like a pro sports team? or is it 'every man for himself' and they all just show up at the place on time?

Really, there's only 3 ways you can fall, on your back, face or what we call a flip bump, like a hiptoss, backdrop, bodyslam etc so most moves are going to be 1 of the 3, so I might go thru it with him once just to make sure I know which bump I'm taking

Not sure who told you the WWE guys work 1x a week. Most of the guys work 4-5 shows a week
Sat, Sunday (some Fridays) - House show (untelevised Live event)
Monday - RAW taping, Smackdown house show sometimes
Tues - SD taping, RAW house show sometimes
Wed Thurs, some Fridays off but guys like Cena do alot of public appearances, autograph signings, charity work etc

    Sundays also PPV's

Depends some guys travel together, some if they live within a few hrs of the event will just drive in. (ie Christian will just drive to Miami for ex from his house in Tampa). Or fly if its more than a few hrs. You're told where to be at a certain time and date and you're expected to be there

This thread is a nice read. Long, but nice.

Do you find yourself more analytical (maybe unintentionally) of wrestling in general now that you are a wrestler? Do you find it harder to just sit back and enjoy like when you first got into it? The internet has created the smart mark, but what does actually becoming a wrestler do to you from a fan/spectator standpoint?

I do watch matches more analytically and critically now, yes. I'm not one for watching moves but i watch the psychology, how the 2 workers lay out the story of the match, how they work the crowd and how they play their respective roles.

I do occasionally have my mark out moments like Steamboat's return against Jericho at Wrestlemania, Y2J's debut, the returns of Cactus Jack in 1997 and 2002, the tribute to Flair on RAW and HBK vs Taker last year.

What advice can you give to a 15 year old who wants to get into wrestling and maybe, some day make it to WWE?

At 15, Finish school first. Sounds whatever but you need something to fall back on.
WWE/TNA only have maybe 100 full time roster spots combined and even if you get in, you need something to fall back on.

    Here's a note I wrote :

I've had a few people ask my advice on getting into pro wrestling. This is the advice I gave them.

I've been in the wrestling business for 14 years now. I've wrestled all over Canada and the US. I hope to get a tryout sometime this year with WWE and TNA as well as ROH or Japan.

Best advice i can give u is First, HIT A GYM!!! (if u havent already). If you have any dreams about making a living in the wrestling biz, u need to look the part, which means being in shape. While you dont need to be some jacked up bodybuilder. I think a wrestler should AT LEAST look like an athlete or at the very least look like someone who can hold his own in a fight.
WAY too many indy guys now have the look and size of my 12 year old cousin!
Sorry guys(and you know who you are). You can be the greatest in ring technician but if the average joe fan cant believe that you can "kick ass", no one can take you seriously out there.
My advice to young wrestling hopefuls. Start weight training in the gym (again, if you havent been already), eating right and if you dont know how, hire a personal trainer or find a friend that does.

Second, find a reputable Pro Wrestling training school. Kryss Thorn's TWA Powerhouse in St Catharines, ON Ruffy Siverstein's School of Hard Knocks in Newmarket, Squared Circle Wrestling in Toronto or Scott D'Amore's school in Windsor are a good start.
If u are able to travel, the best school probably would be the Storm Wrestling Academy (Lance Storm) in Calgary. Or even FCW (WWE's Developmental Camp in Tampa, Florida

The biggest thing in this biz is MARKETABILITY!!! If you are not marketable (ie can draw fans). Promoter have no use for you or at most you'll be some guy at the bottom of the card who MIGHT get booked once in a while.
Yes, in ring skill is very important but as Steve Corino told me over the weekend, there is a difference between a WRESTLER and a WORKER,
A wrestler is great in ring but MAY lack what it takes to be marketable ( look, mic skills, charisma, the ability to "get over" or connect with a crowd)
A worker is one who MAY lack skill in the ring but has IT (ie Hogan, Cena).
Of course it would be nice to be both (HBK, HHH etc).

So ,Develop your look/outfit which means getting PROPER RING GEAR (boots , tights etc.). You wouldn't play Hamlet in jean shorts and a wife beater so why wrestle in them. Look professional!! Once again, you can be the greatest in ring technician but if u look like a fat slob in track pants, no legit promoter will give you the time of day. Be prepared to fork out a few bucks to get good quality, professional gear.

Once youre trained, Start working indy promotions in your area and develop your look, gimmick, ring skills and mic skills. Make yourself as marketable as possible. Then start sending promo packages (tape or DVD of 2 of your best matches, 8X10 Photos, Resume) out to promoters in your area and others.
    Hope this helps,

Thanks so much. I planned to stay in school lol. Just so happens I live in Miami, Florida close to the Tampa, Florida training school you told me about. I'm so excited! If you have any tips for gimmicks or anything else, let me know, I want to start thinking this out. As for lifting, I started a few months ago, I've seen some progress but in a few years I'm sure I'll have great results

Apologies if my questions have already been answered.

Have you ever stiffed out an opponent in the ring and if so why? On the flipside, have you ever been stiffed out by an opponent in the ring and how did you handle it?

Have you ever bladed and if so was it difficult to do?

At 38, how many more years do you think you have left in you with regards to working in the ring?

Gimmicks will come. Build your body/look first, get trained and the gimmick will come naturally. The best gimmick should be a natural extension of yourself, you with the volume turned up.

In your opinion, what was the best gimmick that just never worked out (so much potential, but for whatever reason, never amounted to much)?
