Why Do Soldiers Feel Obligated To Wear Their Uniform in Public?

Sometimes it seems like soldiers back home wear their uniforms in places or at events that have nothing to do with the war (e.g. at church, at a wedding, relative's graduation, other formal events, etc.) Why do they do it? Is it an attention thing?

Some do, however most don't wear their uniforms in public. You can't deny that a set of Marine dress blues looks pimp. I only wore mine by choice once, when I was a boot lol


I know the Army has something about having to travel in their uniform, not sure what it is.


And since people in the military are required to have each uniform, it takes out the issue of getting something to look nice for an event.

In America, we have regulations on how/when/where to wear our uniforms. I wouldn't wear my blues to church, relatives graduation but I would to a wedding, funeral or formal events. I do it because it's a formal environment and no, it is not an attention thing.

Personally i prefer to no wear it unless its required, i think some do it for attention though and it kind of makes me rage a little.

I think each branch has different rules... But I do believe with certain branches they can get in trouble if they get caught not wearing their uniform in certain situations.

In the Army, you're supposed to travel in Class A's on certain occasions. In 6+ years, I've never encountered one of those occasions. A lot of Soldiers will wear their Class A's for formal occasions because once you've been in for a little while, you get all these bells and whistles that make them look really nice. Plus, you stand out in crowds (to females or whatnot).

I never understood why. Personally, I think they are retards for wearing them. I can guess it's pride, atta boy or a "look at me" type of thing.

You just have to wear it while your on duty. Any other time is your choice. I would rip my uniform off the second I got off duty.

It becomes the same deal if you've been in for more than 2 months.

training to be a solider is about erasing individual identity. personal choices about clothing play a role in that. that outfit is their identity.

I'm military and it's almost always an attention thing. I traveled for the holidays and saw all kinds of people (most with little to no rank) flying in dress uniforms. They think they're going to get a round of applause when they walk off the airplane or something.

If you're going on a deployment or flying for duty related purposes that's completely different.

Going to a wedding? Buy a ****ing suit. Stop being such an attention whore.

Which branch? Why does the rank matter? So it's okay for 0-3 to travel in uniform but at E-3 can't? Might not get a round of applause but we do get first seating and upgrades, just sayin'. You can call me an attention whore all you want but I'll wear my uniform within regulations, thanks though.
