Hello! I'm new and need a bit of help :)

Hello everyone! Like I said before, I'm new on this site but I am trying to lose quite a lot of extra weight. I am 5'3 and weigh 195 lbs and am 21 years old. This is the heaviest I have ever been, I feel very disappointed that I let my weight get his far. With that being said, I would like to lose 30-50 lbs. I have set a goal to try to lose 30lbs in the next 4 months, I don't know if it's possible but I am sure going to try. Do you girls have any tips for me to try and lose weight? This is the first time I try to lose this much weight, I don't really know what to do besides eat healthy and exercise. Also, I really enjoy doing aerobics fitness routines, do you know of any good DVD's out there that I could try and hopefully like? I hope u can help, I really appreciate it!

Do you have a gym membership or are you looking to work out at home? Also, lurk around the forum's, and read the sticky's... also search for anything you are trying to find. There is a ton of information on this site... Great time to start fresh!

Thumbs up You can do it!

I did those workout DVD's for a while, and it was just too easy for me to quit in the middle of them. I finally went and joined a local gym, and lemme tell ya - it has been the best 30 bucks a month I have EVER spent. Everything I need to train is in one place, and losing weight has been much easier now that I have the motivation of the gym. Seeing the people there day after day makes me want to show them that I too, can come every day. I make my meal plans (high protein, lower carb, tons of veggies, fruit and whole grains) ahead of time, every week so I know what and when I will eat. I am on Weight Watchers and that is another thing that has been a great use of my $$. When I started this journey at the end of November, I weighted in at 215. I am down to 196 in a little over a month. I'm so glad I decided to take control of my life, and I'm so glad you decided to go down the same path, walked by many before us.

You can read everything and ask all the right questions, but the biggest thing is putting everything you have learned into action. It's going to be hard. Real hard. But, we can do those hard things. Just put your mind on the goal, and run for it. By this time next year I plan to be the way I was before I had my two kiddos. Oh, and another thing is to invest in a MP3 player and take it with you to the gym. The song Fireworks by Katie Perry is a MUST HAVE for your tracks. I always play that song in the middle of my workouts, and it gets me so pumped to go for the gold, so to speak.

Congrats on the start of your new life. You can do this, and don't ever stop - for anyone or anything. And if one week you don't lose any weight, just consider that you have figured out a new way NOT to lose weight. Don't make yourself out to be a failure, because you and I both know it's the farthest thing from the truth.

Don't stop, keep going and ask questions. Put your plan into motion and your 30-50LB goal will be within reach before you know it. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Thank you so much, u are of great motivation to me! I will definitely look into a gym, I know its of much help to have everything u need in one room. Making a meal plan ahead of time sounds like a great idea, that way I don't get tempted to eat anything else because I already know what to eat. It's funny that you mentioned Fireworks by Katie Perry, I love that song and the message it sends out is a great source of motivation to keep going while working out. I know it's going to be hard and at times I will get frustrated but I know that ultimately I need to lose weight and its whats best for me. I would love to reach my goal in 4 months but even if it doesn't happen I don't wanna give up because eventually it will and I can't wait for that day. Thank you so much again, u gave me motivation to really do this and keep going. I hope that u are doing great on ur weight loss journey, we can do it! Happy New Year, 2011 is gonna be a great year!

Jillian Michaels has some great starter videos, but I recommend the gym before to long as well in order to build muscle. You can't burn fat without muscle...and lifting weights (heavy weights) will help that, and trust me you won't bulk up like a guy thats a myth

weight is also very relative, you can weigh a lot but look smaller and feel smaller in your clothes because muscle weight is more dense.

Diet is HUGE......huge!!!! and drinking lots of water too. GL!

Thank you for responding! I am only starting so I want to work out at home until I find the right gym near me. I will have to look for Jillian Michael videos, I know she has a lot of support online with self.com and stuff. Also, do any of you know of a good meal plan I could follow? I'm kind of lost on what to eat and what not to eat.

What to eat is as important as how you work out. I have a complete meal plan and diet page on my forum that you can check. It's easy and really works!! Video's and such can help, but bottom line, you'll burn more calories lifting weights than cardio by a long shot!! The more muscle your body has, the more calories you burn even sitting still. And don't be threatened by lifting! It works! If you want to get rid of the pounds - lift first, then do cardio. Save your energy for the workout, then doing cardio will boost your calorie burning effect for hours. And seriously - you have to get the nutrition right if you really want to see it come off!

Good luck! And go for it!
Life is just one day at a time :D - What are you going to do with this day?

Without throwing in my own story, I was 5'-3", 195lbs too! I lost 40lbs in about 4months, so I would defintely say you can lose 30 in 4! You just gotta eat healthy and exercise! The key to the diet is to eat first thing in the morning to get your metabolism going. And then every 2-3hrs after that. Your metabolism is kinda like a fire, if you let the fire get too low, it takes some pampering to get it going again, but if you continue to feed it wood as its going, it just keeps it going and going and going with no real effort, right? Thats exactly how your metabolism. Sometimes, my eyes arent even openned yet and I'm standing at the stove cooking my 4 egg whites up and oatmeal!

I just want to tell you that you can most certainly do it! If you have a bike, start to work up your endurance on that, if you have decent joints add in some running (walking at first). In the end, you can most definitely get a lot done at home, but at a gym, everything you need is there. Because, while in our situation (weight loss) it seems that cardio cardio cardio is the answer, and it most certainly is, I still do cardio 6x a week, but its also based a lot on strength and getting your muscles worked! The more lean body weight you have the more calories you are capable of burning while at rest. So, Maybe somewhere down the line, It will be something to consider. I think right now gyms are taking advantage of everyone and their New Year's Resolutions and may not be offering very good deals on joining, but if you wait maybe a month, I know I joined in May at a fairly good gym, and I walked in, paid $25 and owed like another $20 and that was it. My dues are 26.99 for a 3 story gym in downtown Seattle. So deals are to be had!

Don't be afraid to push yourself and sweat a lil and good luck! We are all right here if you need anything else!
