Question What's the cheapest grocery store chain in the United States for food?

I just started bulking today, and I've already eaten my entire kitchen.

I heard "Aldis" was the cheapest, but now I'm thinking good ol Wal-Mart, especially for high protein stuff like meats and milk.

Anyone have any ideas of the cheapest place to buy lot''s of food? Wal mart? Kroger? Publix? Win Dixie? Sam's Club? Costco?

Buying in bulk from a club such as Sam's or Costco often is good for some products, but since you asked for grocery stores, I will agree that a Walmart Supercenter probably is the place to go for rock bottom prices.

Some dude just posted that he got a gallon of milk at walmart for $1. I never saw it that cheap, but anything is possible.

I think Costco or Sam's Club is probably the cheapest option, assuming you can store food in bulk.

Besides wholesale clubs, I'd have to say Shop Rite.

The cheapest places near me are usually Wal-Mart and Bottom Dollar Food. Though Bottom Dollar is like a clearance place for food so its stock and availability of foods aren't always 100%. I thought wholesale places would be cheapest, e.g. Sam's, Costco, BJs, etc, but I've found that is not usually the case. For example, my most common item is boneless skinless Chicken Breast and Wal-Mart is usually cheapeast by a good margin. I think I get it for around 1.69 - 1.79 a lb there and if not there, usually around 1.99lb at Sam's Club. I think part of the draw of a place like Sam's is the convenience.

I stick with Aldi's. Also, there's a few "Deluxe" dollar stores around that sell all kinds of groceries. Some of the things go for $2 or $3 dollars, but they'd cost 6 or 7 in a normal store. Aldi is always dependable though.

In the Chicago land area, farmer's markets for veggies / fruits and mexican grocery stores for meat / milk (and some veggies). Up in the twin cities, the asian / hmong markets are amazing for veggies... never tried them for meats though as I disdain the idea of eating cat. For basic dry goods Kroger, Publix, and Aldi are similar enough - shit cheap and good enough quality.

If you want to get really industrious about it, going in with a friend or two on a deep freezer and half / whole cow/pig straight from a butcher could be a good deal depending on the market for it in your area (I know in the sticks in my hometown you could make out pretty cheap per pound this way).

Shop around. The prices vary depending on the size and the item. I've seen stuff that is a lot cheaper at Safeway or Kroger's then it is at Wal-Mart and vice versa. Keep an eye on coupons, buy when prices are cheap, take advantage of deals, buy stuff in bulk at Costco...etc.
