My friend told me this and I didn't believe him, but I really didn't have anything to say back since I'm not really educated around this area. So is that true? Does soda really reduce muscle growth, or affect your gains in any way at all?

does it inherently "reduce muscle growth"? I doubt it. The problem with soda is that it has a lot of just plain empty calories. For instance, a single 12oz can of coke says it has 139 calories and 39grams of sugar (which would be closer to 156 calories so I dont know what the difference is there).a 12oz mtn dew has 170 calories from 46g sugar. and its not like these are nice complex carbs either, its just high fructose corn syrup. soda reduces the amount of calories of real food you are able to consume before gaining weight. So, either you dont get as much macro/micro nutrients as you otherwise would or your calorie intake goes up. But I dont think there are any ingredients that specifically inhibit muscle growth.
