Exclamation Lateral Raises - Tickling sensation in lower back

    First post (exciting right).

I have been weight training for some time now (4 months or so), coming along well, but when I did/do lateral raises around 8-9kg I feel a strange tickling sensation in my lower back. Not necessarily painful, just uncomfortable.

Obviously i quickly realised that this leaves something to be desired so I dropped my weight down to 6-7kg and it pretty much dissapears. Problem is, even training like this for quite some time I still get the tickling when I approach the 8-9kg region again.

I am considering visiting a physio, wont cost me anything to do so, but I figured there is a decent likelihood someone on here has had a similar experience, or at least some advice before I potentially waste a physios time. Any thoughts?

    Cheers all

At the top of the movement there is generally a back hyper-extension furthering the normal lordotic curve of the lumbar spine which can lead to excess pressure on the disks. As always if an exercise hurts or is painful back off from it and readdress your technique, search for muscle imbalances or drop the weight, if it continue to hurt then you should change the exercise. I believe in your case you could benefit to change to the lying version of the lateral raise which does not put unnecessary pressure on the spine.

Hard to tell what the issue is. With only 4 months of training, it could be a form or conditioning issue.

    Smile Same issue

Hey, I have the same issue. It's as if it makes you want to move more than a tickling sensation. My friends all stared at me in disbelief when they heard my problem, its nice to know I'm not the only one!
