    Deadlifts and back problems...

I have lower back problems that will most likely not go away (per many docs and chiro's) Because of this I avoid deadlifts for fear that I will throw my back out again. However in an effort to try and better my situation, I'm wondering if adding light deadlifts could be beneficial to my back problems in the long run. I have a small curve in my lower spine and one vertebrea is slightly turned. I get cracked on a regular but relief is temporary. The doc referred me to a chiro.

Note: The doc says my job is to blame for my back. I'm a copper splicer, which has me climbing telephone poles, pulling 250lb manhole lids, and carrying an 80lb ladder on my shoulder daily. I have been doing this job for 11 years.

I didn't see a question? But just don't dead lift, there are plenty of dude's who do not. Just be careful when squatting, wear a belt. You can throw your lower back out if your form goes to the ****ter when squatting.

I have slight scoliosis in my back as well, so I don't deadlift for that reason. I do rack pulls, it is a little easier on my lower back. The ROM is different at the bottom so not as much stress is on the lower back. You don't get the full effect obviously, but it is better than nothing.

Yeah, exercise is not supposed to hurt you. Modify any exercise to suit your specific needs. Deadlifts are a great tool, but not the only one.

Thanks for the advice. I figure if I can strengthen my lower back I will lessen the risk of injury

They could give you back problems if done incorrectly. I personally have trouble doing them correctly because of me height. As a result, I don't do them very often.

There are many other exercises, so if you feel like they are hurting you, avoid them.
