Turkish President Erdogan attended the Ashura commemorations on December 16, 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey. The first this has been done. He gave a speech discussing Imam Husayn(A), and the dire need for Muslims to be united Shia and Sunni as brethren.
The event was also attended by Senior Adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Dr Ali Akbar Velayati, who also gave a speech emphasising the stance of Imam Husayn(A) against injustice and tyranny, and also urging for unity and brotherhood amongst the Muslims, and highlighting that the enemies of Islam and Muslims and indeed humanity wish to see humanity and especially Muslims divided and in-fighting.
I'll post the translation if and when it comes out.

Oh what is happening to Turkey?
Just the fact that you see this as a good thing Trance stands testimony that you need to stop living in Western countries.
I truly fear for the future of Turkey.
