Post Do you bulk up first or get fit first and cut down body fat and then bulk up?

Do you bulk up first or get fit first and cut down body fat and then bulk up?

My overall goals are: Get a body like David Beckham.

I am currently bulking and getting quite strong, but I still have quite a gut and i'm not doing enough cardio really (motivation has been a problem lately as well as recovery).

My friend has suggested that I get fit first, lose the gut and weight with running and go to martial arts more (I do Taekwondo in which I am a black belt, started doing it again after a long break). He also says that if I bulk up and get big it is then harder to get fit and get cut.

SO, should I lose the weight and regain my fitness with lots of cardio and lighter weights, then hit the bigger weights to get more size?

    What's best?

    Thanks all!

It doesn't matter which you do first. If you feel like you are getting too fat, cut. If you are not too fat yet, bulk.

    Does Beckham have muscle?

    I was being facetious.

But dieting down a bunch, mostly fat, is the best way to go to look like David. He's not a big guy.

Diet, not weightlifting is the answer if you want that kind of physique.

    well, diet plus some cross-training.

I would think building muscle first (bulk) will make it easier to burn off the extra fat later..because more muscle burns fat quicker.

but I am going through my first bulk so I could be dead wrong.

I know how you feel and was wondering the same thing. I do have a little gut, and love handles, and little bits of flab here and there. But nothing to bad... So I decided to go for the cutting phase first, and I am doing it with HH Pro series for up to 6 months or sooner if I get the results I am looking for. I am implementing one of the workouts in the stickies aswell, and on my cardio and ab days, I do HIIT cardio 15 minutes in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. All this is followed by a low-calorie fat loss diet.

Hopefully after a few months I can get the cut I want and lose the body fat that I have had since I was 12 years old and get down to single digit BF %. Then I will start bulking phase, and get huge. ;] Only problem is I herd at 19 years old your young and your metabolism is super high, so low-calorie diets can be bad for you, I don't know how true this is? But I still don't see any other way to lose the body fat.

As others have stated, if your goals are to have a body like David Beckham, then you don't need to do much bulking. You are probably every bit as big as he is right now, you just can't see it through the fat (no offense).

Start by maintaining your current diet and adding a lot of cardio. Reduce intake or increase cardio as needed until desired weight is achieved.

HAHA Farley I love that "Does Bekham have muscles" But yeah the guys on this thread seem to be on the right track if you focus the cardio and the dieting and work in some sort of weight program you can probably achieve his size no problems. I personally think that unless you are a complete hard gainer with an insane metabolism (which does not apply here) then its better to lean up and be healthy and then put mass on afterwords. Don't do it just for the looks do it for the health benefits as well! Good luck man hope to see how you progress!

get fit first... get a basic idea of what you're doing.. then when you've gotten experience.. start putting on mass.... then you cut/change diet.
