    2 miles eliptical equals 2 miles jogging?

    Hey guys, just a quick question I prefer the elliptical for my cardio workouts, and i was just wondering does 2 miles on the elliptical equal to running/jogging 2 miles? Obviously the distance is the same, but if I am able to do 2 miles on the elliptical would I be able to run/jog 2 miles with the same easy effort?

    Thank You

    No I don't believe so. I can do 2 to 3 miles pretty easily on the elliptical, but I find it much harder to run 2 miles. I do use both though. It keeps me from getting bored. Use whatever keeps going.

    Nope. Distance is the same, yeah, but the effort made the sole nature of the movements are different.

    Breathing rate is different on both as well. You breath more while running and get tired faster + more easily.

    the main difference other than the movement is that running you are carrying your bodyweight with you, on an elliptical the machine is a counterweight for at least some if not a good chunk of it. even with resistance levels it works different muscles and such.

    that being said I much prefer the elliptical, hurts less lol

    Running will burn more calories and work your cardiovascular system more strenuously given the same distance.

    At my gym, mostly chicks and obese dudes used ellipticals. lol

    I can run 4-5 on the elliptical before i feel like death. 2.5 on a treadmill makes me want to puke.

    not always the same man. I can bang out 5-6 miles on an elliptical. But running, I get worn out at like 2. the impact takes a toll on you.

    No stationary machine will give you the same results as actually getting out there and doing the real thing.

    Treadmill =/= running
    Eliptical =/= ??running through jello??
    NordicTrac =/= Cross country skiing
    Stationary bike =/= real bike

    The Eliptical I think has a unique advantage in that you can set the resistance and it works different muscles than running ... to it makes a good low-impact alternative or complements running nicely. Distance for distance, it is not as difficult as running.

    Stationary bikes meh ... they're safer than trying to ride on the road so I'll give them that.

    Treadmills are just lame.
    Lifts:
    Bench: 305lb
    Deadlift: 415lb
    Dip: bodyweight + 230lb
    Pull-up: bodyweight x2

    "There's a lot of 5'11 200-225 lbs guys with 10-12% body fat on the Internet. In reality, their "10-12%" body fat is more like 15% body fat or more. Everyone thinks they're on their way to single digit body fat as soon as they see a blurry four-pack in the right lighting. Your final body weight at 5-6% will be a lot less than what you think."

    Ellipticals are much easier on your body - this is important when you are obese. But they are also easier than jogging

    I was going to add that intensity and time also matter, not just distance. I typically only use the elliptical when warming up and use the treadmill for my cardio.

    Ah darn, apparently im still in not so good cardio vascular shape. I need to some how get up to 2-3 miles running, and I was hoping that since I can do 2-3 miles on elliptical with ease I would be able to jog that too.

    Thanks guys I guess back to the drawing boards

    The big bonus of the elliptical is that it's low impact... But honestly, it's also straight up easier than running.

    Not related... well kinda, I remember doing 3 miles or so on the treadmill with no effort after months of using it. Then I could do half of that on the treadmill at 8 mph, I was bascially running an 6-7 min. mile on the treadmill, effortlessly. One day i decided to use the outdoor track, and BARELY made it half a mile around the track, I was so out of breath it wasn't even funny.. Especially considering the track was layered with fine sand and had hills... After a couple of months running outside I noticed a big difference in my cardiovascular health.

    Right now, it's cold as hell outside, so I basically use the elliptical with a high resistance (vary between 12-16), for me and decent incline.. not like running, but it kicks my butt!!

    Squats... squats.. and MORE SQUATS!! I want my legs to f@#$%ing explode!

    Same with me. I tend to alternate a bit. I do cardio 5-6 days per week, and hammering on a treadmill everyday will be awful. I might run on the treadmill 2 days per week and do the elliptical the other three. Depends how I'm feeling.

    Hey. New here. Anyway don't judge dudes on the elliptical! You don't know that maybe they have an injury and can't run at the moment. I've had to use it recently to get any cardio in at all. You do have a point tho that I would rather be running lol.

    I use it for time and low impact. I usually do about 60 min in the 10-14 range. I know if I do 6 miles on the machine there is no way I can do the same on the road. It is a great break from the grind and pounding of running though.

    Elliptical machines suck! Do the real thing!

    I have been working out on my elliptical machine for the past 4 months, 5 days per week, for 1 hour, with a heart rate monitor that kept me between 70% and 80% of my heart rate. Drenched in sweat after each workout.

    The result: No weight loss. I may have built leg muscles because I keep the incline and resistance very high but I'm ready to trash this $5k piece of junk. When I saw that I wasn't getting any results from my 1 hour cardio sessions I took my workout outside to the neighborhood track and the difficulty in throwing my body around the track was much more challenging than any workout session I have had on the elliptical.

    Current Goal: 175 ... Lowest on the scale last time was 182, so probably need to get below 180 this time.
