What sort of "real man" drinks blended scotch?
Kidding, sort of.
Glenlivet 12 is my go to. Love it. I've been drinking scotch for 4 years now and I drink this pretty much all the time.
I used to drink bourbon exclusively, Makers Mark, but tried some J&B one night. Thought it was okay. Tried some Glenlivet and haven't looked back.
Tried Macallen 12, too sweet. Wouldn't go there again.
My wife wanted to get me some for Xmas, so I told her find me some single malt.
She grabbed a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 and it's not that bad. It's a little light but rather flavorful. I was impressed.Semper Fidelis

Ok, heres a christmas scotch I received and thought I would share with you. Picture is exactly the same one as mine, but is from a website
Talisker Distillers Edition 1999 (TD-5: 5MY)
I am not drinking it as I type (am enjoying some surplus Pinot Noir from the christmas banquets) so I shall review from memory only.
Substantially peaty, which I like, but slightly less so than Laphroaig I would say, but more so (as I recall) than the regular 18 y/o Talisker. Very warm, rich, fairly sweet. very drinkable. It's like drinking a gently smoldering wood fire.
I really, really like it, it is in my opinion the best scotch I have tasted in recent years.'Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself' - Jean-Paul Sartre

I cant honestly say ive ever had green label JW, my comment was only based on the snobbery of single malts being regarded as superior to blends, which i generally agree with because it fits with my experiences.
but as i say, never had the green label, if you want to try it, give it a shot'Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself' - Jean-Paul Sartre

Hello scotch brahs!
Big whiskey/bourbon drinker over here.... typically Makers Mark, Makers mark 46, Jameson, and Jack D single barrel.
I have a desire to start venturing into scotch and would appreciate some input. My first scotch experience was JW Red and as you can imagine, I wasn't that fond of scotch after that. My next scotch was a Glenfiddich 12yr which was decent. After that I jumped to JW Blue which a friend brought back from a vacation.... This was quite good and I thoroughly enjoyed the smokey notes.
Considering my limited experience can someone recommend me a good scotch in the $50-60 price range? From reading the first 10 pages or so of this thread it seems JW Black is solid?
Thanks

Hi Hi
I have good and bad news. Sorry for my inactivity, I've been staying away from this thread and whisky all together because I am not in a position to buy any more scotch as im not working anymore. aye tis true not even me with my crazy overspending can afford to sustain any more bottles.
The good news is however once I get settled in again I will have a lot of free time, and a lot of bottles still left. I have nearly 40 now and I've opened a brora and an octomore since we last met. So I should be able to do some good reviews in the near future.

Green Label is my favorite of them but it doesn't match up to even the lesser expensive single malts. It's really good though and I can see justifying the purchase. I've only had it on one occasion but really did like it. Personally I'd go with a single malt though. While the green label tastes great you can't really put your finger on anything specifically. With a single malt I can really appreciate the scotch and it's characteristics

I cracked open my bottle of Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix again last week. After a second tasting, I really think it's the best bottle in my current line up (list of bottles below for reference). It's extremely good. If you happen to have a bottle and havent opened it yet, you're missing out hardcore! Also picked up a bottle of Macallan 18 last week. Nice and smooth, a bit sweeter than the snow phoenix, but the SP has much more flavor over all. Between those two I gave the nod to the SP.
Bottles Currently occupying my bar:
Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix
Glenfiddich 18 year
Glenlivet 12
Glenlivet 18
Macallan 12
Macallan 15 year Fine Oak
Macallan 18
Cragganmore Distillers Reserve
Sazerac 6 year Rye
Pappy Van Winkle 15 year Bourbon
Pappy Van Winkle 20 year Bourbon
Willett Single Barrel Bourbon
Booker's Bourbon
I may be missing one or two others.wat..

Still have two bottles of the snow phoenix sitting at the top of my cupboard. Was going to hold onto them for a while and resell but at least they sound like a good drink if they don't go up much in value.

Ended up receiving a bottle of Laphroaig 10 and Balvenie 12 Double Wood for X-Mas to replace the Glenlivet 12 and Glenmorangie LaSanta bottles I recently finished.
I am absolutely in love with the Balvenie 12, it's right up there with Highland Park 12 as my favorite drams. The Laphroaig is definitely much different when compared to the other single malts I've tried, and yes it was my first Islay experience. I'm still unsure what to think about it...it's not that it's bad to me or anything, it's just that different. It definitely goes down smooth though, I'll give it that.
