A .444 or a .45 70 is perfectly legal.
PRIMITIVE WEAPONS
"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

I dont make the laws brah, just follow them, alot of states made .45 70 and .444 acceptable for muzzleloaders,
Under the new ruling, any single shot, breech-loading rifle with an exposed hammer
and a minimum caliber size will qualify as a primitive weapon.

Damn. So you can have a Breech-Loading .338 Lapua Mag with a big 'ole leupold on it in primitive... Sounds a little off to me. But hey, If you can do it, go for it!

.45-70 ammo is probably easier to come by.

Accurracy depends on the weapon and the shooter. As far as ballistics tables, a quick google search should tell you all you need to klnow.

we're not even capable of using an inline for our primitieve season.
takes all the fun out of trying to lob a ball at a deer in 3ft of snow at -10*.

You can educate yourself on the trip 4 and the 45-70's capabilities on (www.beartoothbullets.com). The shooters forum is a wealth of info. and the cast ammo I shoot from my Marlin LTD IV comes from this guy. If you reload for the 45-70 the capabilities are endless and i'd feel the utmost confidence shooting anything on this planet with my gun. If ya don't reload GARRETT ammo and CORBON ammo come to mind. I killed a lot of critters from gophers to elk with my 45-70.
