Ok so, I keep hearing people mention Sashimi. I've never had it. I've always been too scared to try raw fish I guess, took a lot for me to try the raw tuna and salmon sushi, wasn't the best, but I liked it. But hey, i'll give sashimi a try. What kind do you suggest me trying for my first time?
You should try the yellowtail as sashimi it will prolly be on the menu as hamashi it is very good.

It's all a matter of personal taste, but I love salmon (鮭 sake), squid (いか ika), tuna (まぐろ maguro), fatty tuna (とろ toro) and yellowtail (はまち hamachi).

I've been to Japan many, many times, but oddly the best sashimi I've ever had was in Hawaii. But most decent Japanese restaurants serve some yummy eats.

    Enjoy!!!

I'd start with salmon and/or tuna. My favorite is yellowtail.

YUM!! Sushi is great for you, get the brown rice ones w a good omega rich fish like tuna or salmon, tell them to hold off on the cream cheese or spicey mayo if your roll has it and you are trying to eat clean. Also opt for low sodium soy sauce to dip it in and just use a little. If it has avacado (healthy fat) even better Sushi can be anywhere from about $5 a roll to $40 a roll so shop around, it can get really expensive. Ive found a lot of good rolls for about $10 though

He sort of has a point though... sushi does not agree with some people, I'm one of them. I ate some nigiri salmon and trout 10 days ago... I didn't feel too good for a few days (the symptoms started within about 12 hours or so), was quite bloated and constipated for a few days. I was freaking out thinking I'd got something naty like a parasite or Salmonella... the bacteria was just reacting a bad way in my gut. My bowel habits still aren't entirely the same.

People with weak immune systems or have any intestinal problems... better be safe than sorry. Unfortunately from my experience I know I can't eat sushi again, shame really as it tasted good haha.

Which could also be a result of bad preparation or transit of the fish, not necessarily the raw aspect of the fish itself. The one time I had food poisoning was from deep fried catfish, and I thought my intestines were trying to forcibly escape my body by every means possible. That didn't mean I gave up fish or fried food.

Now, I'm not saying that you personally can't eat raw fish, but to claim all raw foods are bad is just idiotic. Might as well make a random statement like nobody should eat grains because of some people having adverse reactions.... oops wrong thread.

I'm from Vancouver, BC, and we have tons of fresh sushi here.

Your best option (taste and calorie-wise) is fresh sashimi. Wild salmon is the best!

Other great options: sunomono (yam-noodles, or cellophane noodles, very very low in carbs) mixed in a lemon/vinegar broth topped with sashimi (usually shrimp, or you can choose others). Some places are run by Koreans, so you can get Chirashi as a good option too.

A standard sushi roll comes with 1 cup cooked rice and a bit of added sugar, so you can count from there. I usually choose one mayo-based roll (spicy tuna) as the treat and the rest is sashimi (I'm 135lbs on a cut so I have to chose wisely

Not all sushi is raw either. So claiming that you can't eat sushi again because of raw food is ignorant. Try sushi with cooked shrimp, beef, salon, vegetables, etc.

Theres a type of sushi at the place that I go that has beef in it and its delicious.

I got my Sushi platter from Costco brah... I made sure it was safe to eat and it said on the packaging the fish had been frozen beforehand and all the neccersary precautions were took to kill certain bad bacterias or whatever. The rest of my family ate it and were fine afterwards... I was the only one who felt a little off colour for a few days. Normally when I try a new food and it doesn't agree with me I tend to stay away from that particular food because of the previous experience, my gut isn't like a normal person's gut.

If I have sushi again I'll try the cooked stuff.

I LOVE it! I tend to stick with the rolls without the crazy sauces usually but I'm hit or miss. Spicy tuna is my favorite. The only thing that I don't like is all the white rice but if you go post workout and it falls into your post-post workout meal, it fits like a glove. Yum!

its awesome and quite healthy if you have a sophisticated palate and enjoy the intricacies of a beautiful cut of raw fish.

its awful for you if you're a moron american who likes the deep fried nonsense like spider rolls and deep fried crap rolls with tempura flakes oozing with spicy mayo.

I asked my waitress what I should get and she suggested tuna, and that went with what you had suggested so I gave it a try. TBH, I wasn't a big fan at first, but after I put a little wasabi on it and a little of their sweet soy, it was pretty good. I also tried the shrimp sashimi just because I love shrimp.

I may be wrong, but judging by the small picture that you posted there....that doesn't look like sashimi. The shrimp definitely looks cooked in that.

That picture shows shrimp and tuna sashimi. Some sashimi ingredients are served cooked.

Sashimi is bomb but somewhat expensive. I only order it after the gym when I forgot to buy protein powder lol.

Lemon salmon rolls have been my favorite for years. Next is anything spicey with red rooster on top.

Do yourself a favor and get, tuna tataki. It will change your life. You will probably have to order off the menu and write it in or verbally request it to the server.

The sushi joint at Caesars Palace in Vegas is off the scale.

except for uhh, the rice... sushi rice is mashed together tightly and uber sticky, one 6-7 piece roll is generally 1 cup of denser than average rice, plus you then add vinegar, salt and sugar to the rice before serving...
I worked as a sushi chef. most places will do a salad with sashimi though... or noodle soup with sashimi, etc.

sashimi is NOT sushi... its like calling lasagna, pizza.

hmmm...aren't deliveries on mon/tues? 1/2 off = getting rid of old stock. especially in a non-coastal town. vancouver, bc, canada sushi = best of the best. ohio = i'm not sure. :S vancouver gets multiple deliveries per week. but ohio may just get the 1 delivery @ the beginning of the week.
