Official Law Student/Lawyer Thread

Decided to make this thread for several reasons:

1. Forum very often has threads asking for legal advice.
2. Forum very often has threads regarding an individual's interest to attend law school.
3. Current law students can learn a lot by talking to those who already went through the process (I've already received great advice from alumni/lawyers in the misc)

Similar threads oriented towards other professions (marine, doctor, pilot, accountant, etc.) seemed to work fairly well.

My advice as a law student: Don't go to law school without a hefty scholarship. The market for law jobs has sucked since the 1990s.

I'd have to for the most part agree. I'd add that it might not be a terrible idea to go absent a scholarship if you get into a great school (t30, at the very least t50 with some money).

My roommate is taking fed tax. Class seems like it blows, although he said it is a great course to have under your belt.

Australian Law Student checking in. 3rd Year coming up...

Doing a combined B Laws/B Business and Commerce (Accounting) and majoring in Corporate Law...

We have two semesters per year, Autumn Session which is around March - May (then exams) and Spring Session around July - Sept/Oct (then exams). The months vary depends on the university. Currently on break till March 2011

My roommate is taking fed tax. Class seems like it blows, although he said it is a great course to have under your belt.

I'm actually excited to take Crim Pro next semester.

From what I've heard, it is the most useful/practical course offered at law schools.

2L? and fed tax blows especially since i'm in the course section which feeds into the LLM tax program here, and i'm not planning on doing that

i've heard that, of course i just took a contract drafting course this semester so at this point, that's my most useful/practical course

How many years is law school for you guys?

Most universities here only offer combined degrees with either B Business, B Arts, B Science (Psychology), B Social Science (Criminology) etc... which goes for 5 years.
So after your third year you get your non-law major (i.e. Business for me) and in my fifth year I get my Law degree.

With regards to professional recognition and practice, we are recognised solicitors when we graduate. To become a barrister, we have to pass the BAR exam.

Oh and we go straight into our law degree from high school (after Year 12), in my state of New South Wales we do a Higher School Certificate (HSC) exam based on our senior year subjects and the results are computed into a Universities Admission Index (UAI). To get into law, you have to score within the top 10th percentile (90+ UAI Mark).

Hey law brahs. I'm not going into law, but one of my friends is taking the LSAT in about three weeks. Any of you have any good tips for getting a great score on the LSATs? Thanks in advance.

As I said in a recent thread. In this economy I would only advise going to Law School if you fall into one or more of the 3 categories below.

1. Get into a Top 14 school
2. Get into any school with a full or near full scholarship
3. Family connections that will assure you a job after you graduate

If you aren't in one of those categories you are in for a rough road. It's not an impossible road to follow, but being in one of the above categories makes it much easier. 1 and 3 basically guaruntee you some kind of employment, and 2 assures you that you will be in little or maybe even no debt after you're done.

Practice practice practice. Being inherently intelligent is part of the test, the other part is training yourself to be able to answer questions quickly (especially on the logic games).

Best advice I can give is take every single past LSAT. (yes they are all publicly available)

Time yourself after the first few.

I didn't "study" per se, just took a fukc ton of past exams.

I fall under the 3rd category, not that it would be a guarantee, but highly likely that I could use some family ties to pull some strings when the time comes. Thanks for the advice brah, repped.
