Seeing as a decathlete has already been tested to have higher stats than just about every NFL athelte, rugby player, BBaller, hockey player and professional dart thrower - and you obviously haven't read the whole thread. Bryan Clay destroys every athlete, soon he's gonna beat Roman Serble's record with ease.
And rugby players burn american footballers to the ground. American footballers have ZILCH endurance and make 6 tackles on average a game, with padding. Ruggers make 18, in constantly moving play (on average).COMPETITION BESTS:
4kg shot - 13.70m
5kg shot (U17) - 12.55m
6kg shot (JUN) - 11.39m
1.5kg discus (U17) - 32.60m
1.75kg discus (JUN) - 29.70m
5kg hammer (U17) - 30.49m (one turn)
6kg hammer (JUN) - 27.03m (one turn)
800g javelin (U17) - 20.05m
AGE - 15
Want a 16m 6kg throw by next year.

Where have you seen the endurance of a linebacker? Unless you slept with one of course. Haha Don't be biased buddy, I know theirs alot of endurance involved in rugby, and trust me there is in football too, don't say football players dont have endurance because they stop after every play.
BECAUSE its not like rugby players are always sprinting, we go all out, but we also take brakes.
PS: I didn't talk about people in Decathlons so don't go around saying I said football players are more fit than them.

Wow, at first I thought they were only ranking the popular sports 1-10 and didn't think this list was that bad. Then I scrolled and realized they ranked all of them and /facepalmed. Particularly when I decided to check out my favorite sport skateboarding.
I don't really care whether anyone thinks it's difficult or requires athleticism, but these stats revealed how horribly biased and/or ignorant these "experts" are.
NERVE: The ability to overcome fear. Example: High-board divers, race-car drivers, ski jumpers.
Durability: Jake Brown fell 40 feet onto flat ground and walked away. Somehow NBA players are more durable? Puh-lease, even if I wasn't making a comparison it would still be a crime to give NBA players a 7.75 for durability. Don't get me wrong, I love basketball and think the players are incredible athletes but the flopping in the NBA is a complete joke. I have zero respect in regards to their "toughness." Not to mention some of the bigger guys like Yao end up getting injured multiple times a season.
Sorry for the off-topic rant, but this list is really laughable once you begin compare sports across categories.

I ran track in high school and college so i will never downplay just how beastly decatheletes are specially someone like Brian Clay who is one of the best of all time IMO. Decatheletes have the best measurables of all athletes and i put them second on my list. That being said, I honestly believe that american football cornerbacks are the best athletes.
Not only are many corners faster, and stronger than Clay but the lateral agility and adaptation abilities that he lacks is where they thrive. Wide recievers are no slouches when it comes to athleticism and tend to be about 2-3 inches taller than the average corner. They also have the advantage of knowing exactly what they're doing on the upcoming playing. Despite being at this huge disadvantage the corner is fully able and expected to determine what route the reciever is running, to stay step for step with him, and often times make a play on the ball; all this while the QB actively tries to put the ball in the worst spot possible for the CB to make a play. Each play is essentially a 2-on-1 and the reaction time required to break as the receiver breaks is unparalleled.
Furthermore they are also fully expected to tackle ridiculously strong men who often outweigh them by more than 40-50 lbs when needed. Psychologically speaking, the CB position is one where the athlete is pretty much on their own and every mistake they make is exposed and magnified. Conversely when they are flawless the result is no one notices (because the ball isn't thrown his way). What other position in any other sport requires such a diverse and specific skill set?

what a silly question. It comes down to the individual. Ive known people who have acceled in all sorts of sports. Some great at many sports and others only good at that one sport.
What sport they end up doing full time has no bearing on their overall athletic ability.Do you think they'res a bunch of muscle fibers that are lazy watching TV and eating Doritos and say "nah I'm not going unless good ol' CNS lights itself on fire from overload, then I'll help out." -Khryz :D

Not sure why these always turn into rugby vs football fights. Hard to compare when rugby players don't have anything similar to the combine. However on average football players are stronger, faster, and more explosive. Endurance probaly would go to rugby players jogging wise but a lot of the fb players at defranco's have sick conditioning and can perform crazy strongman circuits. Randy Moss is another guy who also has out of this world conditioning. Both sports require mental toughness and rugby players game wise are more versatile because their positions are less specialized

Oh man reading all previous posts is kinda funny...soccer with the best athletes? You've got to be kidding me. These soccer players play a competitive game once a week, ONCE A WEEK. Ya, sure they're running around for the long duration of the game, but there is simply no way soccer athletes can match up to athletes from several different sports. Soccer players and baseball players are disgustingly the most overpayed athletes to.
Just to name a couple sports that have athletes having to put out a more physical output than soccer:
-american football (though, they only play once a week to (competitively)
-hands down ice hockey. Playing a game every second day. The physical demand is far greater in hockey than football or soccer. I've played all 3 sports and hockey was by far the most demanding, and satisfying.
this is getting too long. Anyway, think about all the different sports out there without simply naming your guys' favorite sport as the most physically demanding..or for that matter, with the "best athletes".

I'd have to say it's rugby regardless of the bias that may come with playing it. Yes football may have a few guys on field who are great overal athletes but then you can look at some offence and defensive linemen I'm not saying these guys aren't strong or anything but the actual athleticism required for these positions isn't the same. When you look at rugby all 15 guys on each team are athletes they all have to be as strong and as mobile as they can. Check out videos of New Zealand's Sonny Bill Williams he's a perfect example of the athletic ability required for the sport

QCrugby you make some good points but if I'm reading the question correctly you may be a bit off the mark. While i will concede that rugby players might be more athletic than football players as a team, I don't think that the most athletic rugby players are more athletic than the most athletic football players (Cornerbacks). Also if we're talking about overall team athleticism i think basketball requires the most athleticism per player.
