Cristiano Ronaldo is the best all around athlete in the world. I would put my money on him if he trained for the NFL combine tests. The 225 BP test which I think given 5-6 months of lifting he could put up a decent amount but that would be his only disadvantage. If you watch how insanely fast he is moving from side to side and straight ahead while dribbling a ball if you take the ball away he would be ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that he can jump really high as well. I have read that he can easily dunk a basketball and he is 6'1". Even Usain Bolt said he is his favorite athlete to watch.

    lol...no

cant see him puttin up more than a couple reps on the 225 bench test even after several months training for it.

put him up against someone like brian clay in similar events and see who comes out on top.

Hilarious because you clearly have never seen cristiano ronaldo run all out. He has more agility and flat out speed then bryan clay. He is a decathlete and I think that is extremely impressive but ronaldo does things with a soccer ball at high speeds that cannot be trained. Bryan clay would have to spend his whole life figuring out how on earth to dribble the ball and shoot with that much finesse like ronaldo does. Ronaldo just has to hire a track and field coach and train for a couple years at the most and his natural ability would come out on top. And that is funny you think he oculd only do a couple reps at 225lbs. He is 6'1" 180lbs with 7-8% body fat. Give him a dose of starting strength he could easily squeak out 8-10 reps in 6 month or so. You my friend are hilarious to laugh at my idea of ronaldo not being atleast up there in the worlds greatest athletes. You clearly at your size have never played a high level competitive game for 90 minutes of sprinting and jogging over and over and over and over. Go jump on the treadmill after you read this and set it for 90 minutes and start sprinting all out and jogging all out and tell me how much you throw up. Or go to a soccer field and just start sprinting back and forth and take minimal rest. Also try and dribble a ball and complete passes to teammates while your legs feel like jello and have 90,000 people want to kill you if you make a mistake. Repeat to yourself how funny it is that Ronaldo is not a good athlete while you get sick on the field.

and clearly someone your size only believes pure athleticism is based on running around for 90mins kicking a ball. if thats your definition of the word then fine. this arguments a dead horse thats been brutally beaten in the past. troll food at best.

and 8-10 reps on the BP test is laughable at any combine. i believe this question dealt with who is the best right now. not who is the best if they trained for 5 more years.

edit- and best i could find for ronaldo that gives some hard evidence about his abilites and not just subjective observations is that he runs a 10.6 100m...which is even slower than the 260lb 6'6 All Black known as Jonah Lomu. and why does Messi have a more impressive resume if ronaldo is such a beast?

Finesse? Ronaldo is not an athlete, he's a bad actor, with some ball skill that you can find all over Manchester and Liverpool, without a shread of common decency or sportsmanship in him (the same holds true for most of the Portuguese football team).

Bryan Clay would crush him like a wallnut. Ronaldo can dunk? Cool, he must have a 30-something vert at 6'1". Clay has a 40-something at 5'8".

Can Ronaldo run the 100m in 10.35, long jump over 8 meters, throw a 7.26kg ball over 17m, high jump 2.15m and then do a 400m run in sub-50? Then imagine waking up the next day, having to do 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and a 1500m race to boot.

Bryan Clay, Roman Serble, Trey Hardee, Tom Pappas - these are real atheltes. Easily more athletic than Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Ronaldo.

I don't think most people in here really know what is involved in rugby. It is basically running and then wrestling, running and then wrestling. I have played rugby, american football, basketball, judo, soccer, karate and a few other sports. Rugby was by far the most intense. It was like racing down the court in basketball and then getting into an MMA fight and then racing down the court again, over and over again for two forty minute halves. Most Americans don't have experience playing that sport.

Brain Clay is the best pure athlete in the world.......period.
"Instead of asking “what do I want from life?,” a more powerful question is, “what does life want from me?”

What a liberation to realize that the “voice in my head” is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.

I would have to say professional eaters. They have a unique combination of endurance and mental toughness.

    Soccer.

Name 1 sport where a player in... football, basketball, baseball etc... can do this:

-Run around for 10km NON STOP FOR 90 MINUTES
-while running having the skill level to control a ball, make sudden sprints, tackle other players, out run other players, run after other players after losing the ball, etc..........................................

You have to have extreme endurance, extreme skill to be at the high levels, and extreme fitness at all times. I can't keep count of the superstars who quickly get sent out of a top club because they didn't properly train every game to keep up the level of fitness required. The age level required to be the most valuable as a pro player is between 16-26, you reach your 30's and your not going to compete at the highest level no matter how good you are, it's that intense.

Just check out Bryan Clay people. Seriously.

The dude has scored Max or damn near topped out the fitness test (nfl combine, basketball, sparq, soccer, track) in all major sports.

He has a higher vertical then any NBA player in the last 2 decades
Faster 40 yard dash time then 99.9% of all nfl players
At 180, he benches 365, squats 575 and cleans 335.
Has a better sparq rating then 99.9 percent of all soccer players EVER!

And if you read his interview, the most amazing part is he had a "few mintues" to learn the test and drills before he was tested.

    A few minutes.

Most of these athletes will spend an entire off-season training for their respect sports fit test.

This guy, had a "few minutess".

The portuguese football team that you speak of just beat the world champions/rivals spain 4-0. Should have been 5 but the referee called nani offside on ronaldos shot. Funny you bad mouth the portuguese like the rest of the soccer world because everyone is envious. For a nation of only 10.4 million people to be ranked top 5 in the world for years now must support your theory that all they can do is dribble haha. Go look at the best teams in the world right now and I bet their is a fair amount of portuguese on the roster. When you consider the size of portugal and them playing against countries that are literally 5-10 times their size and they beat those teams that should tell you right there how good they are. Somebody mentioned messi earlier as having a better resume then ronaldo and that makes no sense at all. Both of them have won Fifa players of the year awards and euro player of the year. They both have won champions league finals and actually ronaldo has lef portugal further then messi has led argentina in major national team tournys. I am going to check out those guys you mentioned because I never heard of them so thanks for the heads up.

Envious of what? Envious that I have sportsmanship, respect my opponents and don't have to use deception and deceit to win/gain a tactical advantage (slow me down if the words I'm using are too big for your limited Information Quotient).

Bryan Clay would destroy the NFL combine, and every soccer player, Aussie rugby league player, D1A Wrestler and BBaller. The ONLY human beings who come close are Trey Hardee and Roman Serble. It's only a matter of time before Clay takes Serble's record.

FYI, NZL were ranked 78th in the world, and put the Italians down in SEVEN minutes. They drew all their matches against serious football nations - but simply didn't mass enough points to go through. NZL has TWENTY THREE professional players and zero world cup experience. With Italy, multiply that by 1000 and FOUR WINS.

Notice how ambiguos football is? Portugal may be small, but they have millions of people who only know of football and no other sport. In New Zealand, they all think "Why are they not picking that **** up and running with it?"

And finally, Country size has no impact on the skill of your team, example - Fiji Rugby League team.

Soccer has become a game of diving, faking, screaming ref when another guy mucks up your hair style, double crossing your friends (Ronaldo-Rooney, 2006), managers going bonkers for no reason and good players being put down after one bad match (example, Gareth Bale in his most recent spurs performance. He didn't score, yet we won 3-0. So just how exactly can we find the space to complain that Bale only set up our goals, but didn't score?) and Maradona still finding his way into the spotlight.

You telling me about the Fiji rugby team and new zealand drawing against italy means very little to me to be honest. I was talking about the PORTUGUESE players that you say only know how to dive and have no respect. I agree the diving is the worst part about football but every team does it. It does not make it right but just know it is not just the western european countries who do it. How can you tell me that country size has no impact on the skill of your team. It is just sheer numbers, the more people in the country the better chance of success. Instead of using words like quotient you should just get a statistics book out. Here let me do some basic math for you. 10 people in a room and 2 people are taken at random to play(fill in the activity). 5 people in another room and 2 people are taken at random...what is the chance that the room with 10 people will have better players. Not very hard to understand, why do you think the USA is always good at EVERYTHING, obviously money and opportunities help but it is because their is 307 million people. Portugal has 10.5 million people and sure the majority of the kids grow up playing football but I bet the majority of the youth in the USA who grow up playing soccer outnumbers the Portuguese youth. Portugal is about the size of Indiana and I don't know if you are familiar with geography in the USA but Indiana is a little state. Imagine if Indiana were to get a team together to play the rest of the USA in anything how bad would Indiana get killed? Basic math 101 and I did not even need to use a calculator or the word quotient. Not trying to talk shiv to you I am just saying I myself am 100% portuguese so when I see people bad mouthing them like they don't know how to play football it annoys me. Portugal is always laughed at but yet all the biggest clubs in the world have portuguese players and they are consistently one of the best teams.

One more thing before I go. You are only 15 years old so you probably did not watch Ronaldo play when he first got to England 7 years ago. I watched every game as I am from the same island that he is and my family and I are big supporters obviously. When he first got to england the way he played would frustrate the english defenders and they fouled him all game long. He was only 17-18 years old but he was making a mockery of them and so they would retaliate and chop him down. The refs in england never did anything about it because that is the english game, fast and aggressive. The way you play in portugal is speed and flair and the english defenders did not like that. Sir alex ferguson used to lose his mind and always want the referees to protect ronaldo and for the first 2-3 years of his career it never happened. So ronaldo figured well hell if all I am going to do is get fouled all the time and not get calls then I am going to start diving a little here and there to see if I can draw something. I think it ended up backfiring because now he does dive to much and flop and referees know about it. So in a weird way it never worked but I just wanted you to know that their was a time when he did not dive all the time. Being fifteen I doubt you really watched closely 7 years ago at the age of 8 how he played.

I wont lie, I didnt even watch football then. I saw one or two matches at White Heart Lane (always supported Spurs to piss my die hard Gunner brother off, but recently took a liking to the team - not to mention the fact I met Heurehlo Gomes, training at my gym).

But Ronaldo to me may have been good once, but every performance I've sen him from him, he has either:
    * dived, in every one
    * cheated in some way (getting Rooney sent off for an accident)
    * shown disresepct (the wink, spitting into the camera)

of course, I won't deny his control of the ball is good, but when you look at people like Gareth Bale, who absolutely destroyed Maicon and the rest of Inter Milan single handedly - and the fact he comes from a nation VERY similar to New Zealand (in that, they all see that ball and immediatly feel like picking it up and running with it) - that to me, shows a true athletic gift.

I won't lie, I only have taken soccer as a serious sport since September, when I scored my first hat trick in my first game.

It's Decathlon athletes hands down. Read this:

Is Bryan Clay the World's Greatest Athlete?
    December 21, 2009

We're not exactly sure, but who can argue with his results?

ARTICLE- IN MARCH, 2008, SPARQ MAG HOOKED UP WITH OLYMPIC
DECATHLETE BRYAN CLAY TO SEE HOW HE’D COMPARE TO SOME TOP RATED ATHLETES WE’VE TESTED.

Athletes who train and compete to do the decathlon—the 10-sport track & field event that includes 110-meter hurdles, long jump, pole vault, and javelin, among others—are often dubbed the World’s Greatest Athlete. In a recent round of SPARQ Testing, the current world-champion decathlete, Bryan Clay, proved he deserves that lofty title.

Clay’s Ratings stand among the best. His
football rating is 130.40, close to the high scoring 132.00 recorded at the 2008 Nike Combines, where more than 10,000 high school athletes were tested.

“This guy is at the top of the charts in our football ratings, baseball rating—basically all these ratings,” says Krist Homsi, SPARQ’s Science Director, who witnessed Clay razzle-dazzle the tests at Azusa Pacific University in southern California.

Despite decathlon having such different demands than those of team sports like soccer or basketball, Clay, 28, nailed every test except for agility ones. Like in the 30-yard sprint—performed on a field instead of Clay’s usual track and without his standard track spikes—Clay ran faster than Boston

Red Sox Jacoby Ellsbury. Sprinting 40 yards, Clay covered the distance just 0.05 seconds slower than top NFL draft prospect Darren McFadden did at the 2008 NFL Combine.

Clay tries to downplay his impressive results, saying how different it was to run on grass. “I think I could have done better if I’d had time to practice,” saying he had about two minutes before each test to figure it out. “Then it was strap on the shoes and see what you got.”

Clay rocked it on vertical jumps as well. On his fourth attempt at the no-step vertical jump, he hit 43.5 inches, which compares to the highest ever recorded at the NFL Combine. His 1-step vertical jumpwas an astounding 42.5 inches—higher than max vertical jumps recorded at recent NBA Combines. Does gravity not affect this guy at all?

Growing up in Honolulu, this athletic phenom didn’t come to organized sports until he was 12, when his mom said he had to do either track or swimming to stay out trouble. “I didn’t want to wear a Speedo, so I picked track—which is funny because now I wear
Spandex pretty much all day long.” In 1998, he started college at Azusa, and he’s stayed there ever since. Clay snagged an Olympic silver medal in 2004, and he’s poised to grab gold in Beijing this summer.

The only tests Clay didn’t excel at were agility ones, which makes sense since decathlon doesn’t demand any shifty side-to-side moves. “Quick changes of direction are more critical for field or ball sports than the track, where linear acceleration and speed rule,” says Homsi, who reports that “lacking room to open up to full speed, Bryan looked like an antelope trying to run tests better suited to a squirrel.”

Even without any dart-like-a-squirrel moves, Clay’s ratings stand among the best. His football rating is 130.40, close to the high-scoring 132.00 recorded at the 2008 Nike Combines, where more than 10,000 athletes were tested. Estimating an agility cone drill score, Homsi estimates Clay has an 89.00 basketball rating, which ranks with the top rating recorded for hoops—an 89.70 recorded by Brandan Wright, the 6’ 9” forward who plays for the Golden State Warriors. It also ranks with the 86.80 recorded by NCAA All-American Derrick Rose.

Proving his dominance, Clay also had a good time during the two and a half hours of testing. “I always like a new challenge and today was a bunch of new challenges. It was fun to know what people had done and then try to beat those times or those heights.”

    CLAY’S RATING RESULTS
    FOOTBALL - 130.40
    SOCCER - 96.50
    BASEBALL - 102.00
    BASKETBALL - *90.00

"My lifts are not that spectacular. I weigh about 180lbs, my bench is 355lbs, my full cleans are 335lbs, and my squat is around 580lbs. The only thing is I don’t max anymore. Those marks are all from a few years ago. It is too hard on the body, now I just work off a percentage of that weight."
