Down Time??

i have been lifting now for eight weeks, im not lifting super heavy because im more looking to get in shape as opposed to getting big. lately i have felt slight pain when lifting in my shoulder, feels like an injury i had 15yrs ago playing h.s. football. people are telling me i should take a week off from lifting every 6-8weeks because it gives the body time to heel completly, this kind of makes sense to me, does anybody practice this?

It seems that you need a rest to help recover.
I only take time off for:
Sickness
Overtraining
nagging injuries

For me there are certain exercises that I cannot do anymore . Upright rows and press behind neck are two, they just kill my right shoulder and upright rows at one time was a favourite exercise . IMHO as far as joints go it is ok to work through discomfort but not outright pain.
