Can you 'cut' while not training?

I've been wondering about this. All of us here while cutting are training hard, eating well, etc. I was wondering if it was possible to cut while not training at all. I mean, it must be, creating a calorie deficit and all, but it begs the question:

I know people who don't train who are undereating every single day. This is mostly women. Their sedentary maintenance is around 1200-1400 cals a day. This is what an impedience test will say, that is when you sit on your ass and do nothing all day, your body burns this much. Now with the walking around, it probably increases. But, these people I know are eating at most 1000 cals a day. I swear, in the morning I have friends who will have 1 toast with pb. For lunch, a salad, for dinner, an apple and a yogurt. It's the same routine, they say they are not hungry.

Now, this is way less than 1200 calories a day. But, they do not lose any weight. Is the body simply going into some kind of starvation mode so it won't allow it to drop any weight? Is this why people who don't eat screw up their metabolism and when they start training and eating a lot, they gain fast?

It was just confusing me to no end and I was wondering if anyone here had any theories.

Some trainer once told me you don't need to train to 'cut', just create a calorie deficit so that is why I was asking.

Why would you need to train to lose weight. Most diets people do these days are just eating lower in calories. The only difference is that people who lift weight, do cardio or heck just move around tend to lose weight only faster.

Hint, most that also dont train and say they eat under maintenance also dont count calories or eye ball what they eat and never lose weight or gain. I see people all the time at work who want to lose weight or are on diets and every time there is some kind of cake, cookie or crap on the table they eat it.

You can. However, many fitness experts say that, in the process, you may lose more muscle since you are not working them out, thus giving your body no reason to keep them, especially if protein intake is inadequate. As a result, you won't end up looking as "cut" in the end.

As ian0789 suggested, those who claim to eat under maintenance yet don't lose are probably underestimating their intake. One of the things people commonly forget to add into their total intake are BLT's, which stand for bites, licks, tastes. For example, someone is shopping, and he is sampling some foods that are sometimes available to sample. He may to forget to add that into his intake.

I'll check them next time, but I swear they under-eat. I've seen them do it all day long.
