The difference between rest and sleep for muscle growth??

Guys do any of you know if there is a huge difference between resting (lay in bed in the dark but not fully asleep) and full sleep?

I'm a shift worker and I try to sleep before my first night shift but some times I just lay for 2 hours and can't fall to sleep. I also don't get much sleep in the day but I try and stay in bed and rest even if I'm not asleep. Does your body still repair an grow the same when just resting as it does while asleep??

    Thanks.
