Interesting take on why Ron (from the Quest Protein Bar blog) believes that "preferred fuel source" is not an accurate statement when describing the role of dietary carbs.
Carbs are not your body’s preferred fuel source – despite what you have been told
http://blog.questproteinbar.com/?p=13
Cliffs:
-When present, alcohol (not carbs) is preferentially used for energy.
-Alcohol is toxic and not necessary for survival.
-It can be deduced that that the body doesn’t "prefer" alcohol, but rather prioritizes removal of the toxin.
-Carbs are not necessary for survival and blood glucose is very tightly controlled.
-Conclusion: Carbs are not a "preferred" fuel source, and instead are potential "toxins" that have to be carefully handled/removed.

The brain can utilize ketones up to 75% of total energy intake however it still requires 25% to come from glucose. In the case of a no carb diet that glucose would have to come from the pathway of gluconeogenesis.
While CHO are not essential because they are most readily available in the body for use and are thus best for performance athletes.Always Rep back

using a substance because it's dangerous to keep in the body for long periods of time = using a substance because your body "prefers" to. in essence, it doesn't change anything. the reasoning however is different, and very interesting.
