Ask a College Baseball Player Anything.

So I have seen that there has been alot of threads on asking about college football recruiting and questions, so i decided to give baseball players some help.

I would rather not reveal where I play but regardless I do have a lot of friends/teammates/family members that have played D1 baseball all over the country and have been drafted/played in the pros. So I can answer almost any questions baseball players have about recruiting, student-athlete life, etc.

    SO ASK AWAY
AVI FROM DECEMBER 2008...yea i know, i really need a new one

Currently looking to play at Fordham/Niagara U, 5'9' 145 right now topping out around 88-89mph off the mound, obviously need to put on some more weight have arm strength and potential to be throwing 92-94 down the road. I only lift from oct-jan/feb in the off season so I need to get the most out of it.

Planning on doing a 3 day set (have already started somewhat).
Day 1- Legs/Abs (Should I add back to this and incorporate Deads, etc. into this?)
Day 2- Lats/forearms/Shoulders(Light, right shoulder still a little tender from tendinitis)
Day 3- Bi's/Tri's/(Light chest, don't want too much stress on shoulder)

What exercises do you suggest for each day, assume you had a 3-4 day lifting schedule as a pitcher in college like most schools do, whatd you guys do?
Add/subtract what ever you think is best.

WOW bro. strong potential, once you develop and out on some weight and maybe height(you never know) you will be pumping ched.

I would def incorportate deads into your routine because they are overall a useful sport-specific exercise and promote overall strength and mass. IMPORTANT: start light and make sure you get your form right to avoid injury, watch videos on youtube to gain knowledge of this. Also maybe think about incorporating hang cleans, my schools strength and conditioning program really hammers this lift due to its explosive, compound movement. So, just something to consider.

For your Day 2, just make sure you aren't doing any presses over your head for shoulders, can be potentially more harmful to your arm but my philosophy has always been with the right form, you will be fine. Maybe ven33 has more of an opinion on this since he is also a pitcher (I only hit). I would also add some barbell rows and pullups to this day...

For you Day 3, maybe think about incorporating some light DB bench press instead of barbell bench. With dumbbell benching, we recognize that we get better range-of-motion, freer movement of the humerus (instead of being locked into internal rotation), and increased core activation – particularly if we’re doing alternating DB presses or 1-arm db presses. There is even a bit more scapular movement in these variations (even if we don’t actually coach it). Therefore, making it more safe on our rotator cuffs. you should use DB benching as your primary upper body pressing movement in addition to push-ups so it balances out your rows, pullups, etc. (vertical pulling is very helpful for pitchers).

At my school we got a 4 day off season program, PM me if you would like me to send you a sample week just as a reference for your own program.

good luck in your continuing future baseball career. sounds like you got a lot of potential to go far in the sport. Remember to work hard because ur competition is always working harder

Its so damn hard though..I feel like its impossible for me to gain any substantial amount of weight no matter how much I eat. I'll fill out easier in the next coming 2-3 years but I need the size now. I feel as if I wanted to gain weight id have to take 2-3 shakes of Serious Mass a day...while consuming a ton of carbs/protein that I simply either dont have the appetite for and/or Its honestly difficult to eat exactly the stuff I need from a bulking diet.

Best part about putting on weight is eating when you aren't hungry. Basically to put on weight you need to be in caloric excess. If you want to make it easier go out and buy a gallon of 2% milk and drink 1 every two days on top of what you eat. Should help you get more cals....stop making excuses.

this right here. milk is a great way to get calories, also I have heard people take shots of olive oil and eat a handful of nuts every couple hours.

Here is my weight gainer shake I made up that really helped me gain weight:
    2 Cups of Milk
    3 tablespoons of PB
    1/2 Cup of oats
    2 scoops of protein
    Choco Syrup (Sparingly for taste)

Usually drink it in the morning/post workout

When i played for braves minor league they gave pbj sandwich with chocolate milk on the away game bus rides. It works man. Also u can buy a tub of mixed nuts. Its cheap as h#ll and gives u a buck load of good calories, fat, fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. X3 on what they said about the gallon milk.

this right here. milk is a great way to get calories, also I have heard people take shots of olive oil and eat a handful of nuts every couple hours.

Here is my weight gainer shake I made up that really helped me gain weight:
    2 Cups of Milk
    3 tablespoons of PB
    1/2 Cup of oats
    2 scoops of protein
    Choco Syrup (Sparingly for taste)

Usually drink it in the morning/post workout
Yeah come to think of it I really don't drink that much milk, and ive been making my weight gainer with water instead of milk. I've been meaning to get some oats to bulk with...what do you use like granola oats or straight up oats in the quaker tub?

I'll start taking something like that every mourning and post workout ill just have my straight up serious mass with water since its a little difficult to mix it with milk and all that after im done lifting since I live about 20 min away from where I lift.

    btw you get my pm?

    Doing Legs/Abs/Deads tm
I might do purely legs in the gym I can do most everything for abs at home.

Any1 have any suggestions for abs/legs or willing to link me their typical routine?
    Planning on
    3-4x 5 reps squats
    3x8 of hamstring curl
    3x8 leg extensions
Was thinking of doing 3-4 min on bike on hills with highest resistance I can (dont want to go too long...trying to gain weight)
    3x6 Deads
3 sets legs raises till fail
    weighted situps
    Planks and side planks

any1 have anything else to add?

I would say add in some RDLs because they work your posterior chain which is important to baseball. Make sure to keep ur core tight, a big chest, and an arched back to avoid injury.

DB lunges are also not a bad idea for maybe a warmup and as a stabilization exercise.

i would link u 2 my routine but since im an olympic lifter now i cant reccomend my work out to u. Few suggestions: keep the real heavy weight (squats & deads) in the 3~5 rep range (so lower the reps on the dead). Keep the isolation exercises (leg curl & extension) in the 8~15 rep range (so ur ok on this 1). Ur trying to put some weight on, not a champion mountain climber in the giro di talia. Now that ur trying to pack on some muscle ur cardio now has to either be: a) 30 min or less of (easy) steady running/biking/swiming etc (can b done on any day of the week, to get the blood flowing). b) sprints with more than 2+min rest inbtween sprints. Or c) intervals. U wont last more than 30min with b&c unless ur bsing. b&c is done with 1rest day inbtween legs day.

To add to this, make sure you keep your eyes forward to the mirror/wall. This will prevent your back from curling over and keep you from getting injured.

Johnny I have several questions(1) what percentage of college baseball players are on full scholarships vs. partial and define partial(exactly what is paid for). (2).Where are the best financially sound programs and which programs are struggling or may not be around in 4-5 yrs. (3).Did you start at JUCO or right at D1 school. (4). I'm more of a football guy and more familiar with D1 football recruiting but talking around to friends in football D1 is really alot about physical attributes ( 6' or better, wt, and speed) I'm noticing a similar trend with top recruited pitchers. Do you agree with this observed trend and whats the realty for the 5'9-5'10 pitcher at the top programs and with pro scouts? Thanks.

Hey Coaching Dad, hope these answers help and if i get them wrong there are other guys here that i am sure will correct me.

    (1) Since college baseball is a non-revenue sport like football or men's basketball, the player to scholarship ratio is a a lot lower, making full scholarships in baseball very rare. Division I baseball schools are allowed a maximum of 11.7 scholarships, Division II schools have 9.0 full scholarships. They are usually spilt up over 25 players with the highest percentage going to pitchers then catcher and shortstops. Anything over 50% is a great offer and remeber they can increase their scholarship offer, which frequently happens if the player gets drafted high in the amateur draft but getting a full ride is very rare. I only personally know 1 guy I played with that got offered a full ride to a school and he was a pitcher that was a top ten pick in the draft.

    (2) Usually the teams that are constantly in the top 25 are usually very financially sound but lately there has been talk about Oklahoma State getting a fat donation from a alumni to the athletic program so all their sports teams are getting hooked up, even the baseball team. here is a preview of how rich they are through their basketball teams lockerroom.

I can only name a few as of now. I know that this season is the last for California's Baseball Program. I know that Northern Iowa and Vermont recently dropped their programs too. Other than that, I don't really know because they usually don't announce the drop until right before their last season.

    (3) I started right out at a four year school but i did get recruited by a lot of JUCOs. I think JUCOs can be a great opportunity for some people but wasn't for me.

    (4) I do think it is somewhat important for pitchers that they are tall. They reasons for this are outlined here: http://www.helium.com/items/894155-w...short-pitchers
Yet i still think height and size isn't looked at as subjectively as in football. Look at some of the best pitchers today, they really aren't that tall, like Tim Lincecum who is only 5'11". I also know a lot of guys that are below 6' tall and still throw well into the 90s. I have always thought that baseball recruiting was based a lot more on a players tools than his physical build, unlike football that puts more emphasis on a recruits size.

Agree with you there, maybe its because I'm short too but it is true that you are going to find more pitchers that are taller throwing harder, and having more success than a shorter pitcher doing the same, theres only 1 kid I know that is the same size as me(5'9 145) throwing relatively the same, 87-89mph. A coach most likely won't totally dismiss you because you are not the ideal 6'1+ guy, if you have the talent/tools you have nothing to worry about.

In conclusion -shorter pitchers with good arm strength and tools are just harder to come by.

all this information is really helpful johnny! one question for you is what are your thoughts about the program ws4sb3? im going to start running this program fresh after i recover from surgery, because i know some of the older kids at my school used it in the past for conditioning and said it was great. also another question is how did you incorperate overall speed into your training to become a better runner/baserunner? Thanks for any replies!

Thats exactly what I was trying to get at. your right in that there are more tall pitchers that throw harder but that doesn't neccassarily mean they will get recruited harder because they are taller. in baseball, throwing 90 is the same from a 6'3" guy as a 5'9" guy. The only reason taller guys could be better is because they have more frame to fill out in order to generate more power/throw harder. Not sure if that is true though.

Thanks bro, just trying to give knowledge out that I wish I had at your guys age.

I ran that program in high school when i first started getting into lifting. I think it is a great routine for hitters, it might not be ideal for pitchers due to somewhat heavy stress on shoulders. It really helped me put on some great mass, which I had struggled with all through high school. Also, there is no perfect way to incorporate speed training into your workout regime. I do it twice a week, once on a leg day of mine and the four days after that. I really don't do a lot of speed training because it really isn't a big part of my game.

you will love this article though
    http://www.defrancotraining.com/articles.html

it is a great template for ws4sb3 and even has a section on how to incorporate speed training into the workout.
